The Paradox of Paradoxical Embolism and Recurrent Stroke

open access: yesJACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, 2014
Ischemic stroke is a complex condition with multiple possible causes, but up to 30% to 40% of patients have no identifiable source despite a “thorough” evaluation; that is, the strokes are cryptogenic.

Unrestricted kinematic alignment on the sagittal plane: Posterior tibial slope and combined flexion do not have boundaries to respect in terms of short‐term clinical outcomes and safety

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Personalized alignment in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is gaining traction as a surgical philosophy. True personalization, however, must encompass not only the coronal plane but also the sagittal and axial planes. This study evaluates influence of the Tibial Slope (PTS) and combined flexion (CF) on outcomes in TKA performed using ...

Vacuum-Assisted Thrombo-Aspiration for Paradoxical Embolism in Left Renal Artery: A Case Report and Literature Review

open access: yesVascular Specialist International
Paradoxical embolism through the foramen ovale is a rare and devastating event requiring urgent treatment. Herein, we present the case of a 23-year-old male who presented with a pulmonary embolism complicated by a left renal artery paradoxical embolism ...

Genetic Determinants of Fatty Acid Composition in Subcutaneous and Visceral Adipose Tissue

open access: yesObesity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Fatty acids in adipose tissue are key structural and metabolic regulators of cardiometabolic health, but the genetic architecture governing depot‐specific composition in subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is not well defined.

Paradoxical Air Embolism during Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Air embolism is a rare complication of percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Patent foramen ovale, which is necessary in fetal circulation, is a potential route for emboli arising from the venous system to enter the systemic arterial circulation, resulting in ...

Operando X‐Ray Diffraction Study of MXene Electrode Structure in Supercapacitors with Alkali Metal Electrolytes

open access: yesSmall Science, EarlyView.
Structure of Ti‐MXene electrodes is studied using operando synchrotron XRD in supercapacitors with alkali metal chlorides and H2SO4 electrolytes. Significant changes in MXene interlayer distance are found during charge/discharge cycling in LiCl, NaCl, and KCl electrolytes.

Pulmonary Thromboembolism in a Patent With Patent Foramen Ovale

open access: yesCase Reports in Clinical Practice, 2019
During the recent years, paradoxical embolism and Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) have drawn great attention because of their strong correlation with cryptogenic stroke in young patients.

Thrombus straddling a patent foramen ovale, pulmonary embolism and paradoxical embolism: a rare trifecta

open access: yesBMJ Case Reports, 2018
A 55-year-old male presented to the emergency room after awakening with left facial droop, left-sided weakness and garbled speech. Vitals were significant for hypotension (73/43 mm Hg) and hypothermia (35.3°C).
