To Greater Twist: A Kinetically Biased π‐Radical Cascade

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
π‐Radical cascades enable step‐economic construction of complex polycyclic aromatic frameworks. In this work, we show that a multifurcating pathway can be kinetically steered toward a single, more distorted product. This counterintuitive “falling‐upward” outcome arises from an intrinsic mechanistic bias, revealing a broader dimension of control in π ...

Perceptions of Emergency Department Crowding in Pennsylvania

open access: yesWestern Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2013
Introduction: The state of emergency department (ED) crowding in Pennsylvania has not previously been reported. Methods: We assessed perceptions of ED crowding by surveying medical directors/chairs from Pennsylvania EDs in the spring of 2008.Results: A ...

Field‐Driven Active Colloids as Distributed Micromachines: Bridging Physics, Control, and Function Across Length Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Field‐driven active colloids are framed as distributed micromachines in which externally supplied power, sensing, and control regulate task‐relevant states. By closing the loop between particle behavior, imaging, computation, and electric or magnetic actuation, these systems can progress from programmable motion toward adaptive functional outcomes ...

Nonlinear Ion‐Specific Control of Underwater Adhesion by Bottlebrush Polymer Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The efficiency of underwater adhesion is modulated by ion‐specific effects. Strongly hydrated Na+ remains separated from the mica surface by its hydration shell, preserving access to binding sites, whereas weakly hydrated K+ can partially dehydrate and occupy ditrigonal cavities.

The Financial Impact of Emergency Department Crowding

open access: yesWestern Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2011
Objective: The economic benefits of reducing emergency department (ED) crowding are potentially substantial as they may decrease hospital length of stay.

Spatiotemporal Regulation of Hierarchical Assembly of Hydroxyapatite for Enamel Remineralization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Biomimetic repair exhibits unique advantages for enamel regeneration compared with conventional clinical treatments. An enzymatic mineralization system (EMS) is developed, where the resulting HAP nanorods hierarchically assemble into a highly ordered structure on the enamel surface through the spatiotemporal modulation of interfacial energies of ...

Intelligent Polymer Electrolytes for Next‐Generation Zinc‐Based Energy Storage Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Intelligent polymer electrolytes are organized into a three‐level hierarchy that advances zinc‐based energy storage from passive ion conduction toward active, adaptive, and intelligent operation. Molecular regulation of Zn+ coordination, water activity, desolvation, ion flux, and interfaces underpins adaptive self‐healing, anti‐freezing, adhesion, and ...

Temporary Programs, Lasting Questions: Ad Hoc Assistance in the U.S. Farm Safety Net

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Large ad hoc assistance programs have returned to U.S. farm policy since 2017, operating alongside a more developed safety net built around federally subsidized crop insurance, Title I commodity programs, and standing disaster assistance. This paper reviews the renewed use of ad hoc assistance, documents its recent scale using USDA data, and ...

Crystal Structure Prediction of Inorganic Materials: A Benchmark and Modern Evaluation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Predicting a crystal’s structure from composition alone is a long‐standing challenge in materials discovery. The CSP180 benchmark of 180 inorganic crystals evaluates thirteen crystal structure prediction algorithms requiring no density functional theory (DFT) against DFT‐based baselines across twelve metrics.
