THE EMERGENCY EVACUATION OF A GERIATRICS HOSPITAL IN TOXTETH

Age and Ageing, 1982
The evacuation of a 102-bed geriatrics hospital in the middle of the night and from the centre of a riot in Toxteth, Liverpool, is described, together with its effect on the patients involved. No increase in the mortality rate occurred during the six weeks following the evacuation, but a significant increase in morbidity was found.

On the Use of Elevators During Emergency Evacuation

2019
In this paper, we study the use of elevators during the time of emergency evacuation. We review the State-of-the-Art and analyze the risks, benefits, and safety measures associated with the use of elevators during hazardous situations. In the end, we discuss some open issues related with the use of elevators in emergency evacuation and propose a smart ...

Effective Robot Evacuation Strategies in Emergencies

2019 28th IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN), 2019
Recent efforts in human-robot interaction research has shed some light on the impact of human-robot interactions on human decisions during emergencies. It has been shown that presence of crowds during emergencies can influence evacuees to follow the crowd to find an exit.

Emergency evacuation systems

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1972
IN THE EARLY 1960s a review of CAB accident report data showed that a large number of passengers involved in survivable accidents survived the crash impact but died as a result of asphyxiation because they were unable to evacuate the aircraft.

Distributed networked emergency evacuation and rescue

2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), 2012
This paper briefly discusses cyper-physical systems that include human beings and vehicles in a built environment such as a building or a city, together with Sensor Networks, Communications and Decision Support Systems, with the purpose of optimising the human outcome in the case of an emergency.

Global Optimization of Emergency Evacuation Assignments

Interfaces, 2006
Conventional emergency evacuation plans often assign evacuees to fixed routes or destinations based mainly on geographic proximity. Such approaches can be inefficient if the roads are congested, blocked, or otherwise dangerous because of the emergency.

PSO-Based Emergency Evacuation Simulation

2011
The Emergency Evacuation Simulation (EES) has been increasingly becoming a hotspot in the field of transportation. PSO-based EES is a good choice as its low computation complexity compared with some other algorithms, especially in an emergency. The selection of fitness function of each particle in PSO is a key problem for EES. This paper will introduce

Anticipatory Emergency Elevator Evacuation Systems

2013
This paper proposes a new type of emergency elevator evacuation systems, named anticipatory emergency elevator evacuation systems, which can detect and predict hazards in the emergency evacuation, and then dispatch the elevator cars anticipatorily, aiming to avoid hazards beforehand, thus to rescue more occupants and to shorten the evacuation time ...
