Animal Behavior as a Strategy Optimizer: Evolution of Resource Assessment Strategies and Optimal Emigration Thresholds

The American Naturalist, 1976
Models are proposed which examine emigration thresholds from resource patches encountered within a given search strategy. With one patch type and no competition during utilization, there is a single optimal investment duration (Iopt) which depends on the gain accumulated during investment in the patch, G(I), and on the mean search cost between patches.

An Experimental Analysis of the Genetic Relationships among Life-History Traits and Emigration Behavior in Tribolium Castaneum

Oikos, 1988
To test several hypotheses concerning the optimal life-history characteristics expected to be associated with individuals encountering primarily high or low population density, we scored flying behavior, development time, fecundity, and competitive ability in two populations of flour beetles (Tribolium castaneum) differentiated with respect to ...

Some behavioral aspects and proximate causes associated with emigration of young female Misaki feral horses

Italian Journal of Zoology, 2010
An investigation was carried out on 28 Misaki young female feral horses living in Misaki Island, Japan to explore the behavioral patterns, and proximate causes of emigration of these females when they left their natal band or mothers. All young females emigrated between 1 and 4 years of age.

Emigration behavior and molting during the sea‐to‐land transition of terrestrial hermit crabs under laboratory conditions

Invertebrate Biology, 2015
AbstractTerrestrial hermit crabs in the family Coenobitidae (genera Coenobita and Birgus) must migrate onto land after completing a pelagic larval stage in the ocean. Better knowledge of emigration behavior would assist in the conservation and management of coenobitid populations by helping identify and protect the habitats they need to complete their ...

Effect of Male Emigration on the Vigilance Behavior of Coresident Males in White-Faced Capuchins (Cebus capucinus)

International Journal of Primatology, 2001
I examined the vigilance behavior of male Cebus capucinus residing in four groups in Santa Rosa Park, Costa Rica. One male emigrated from each of three study groups, providing ideal experimental conditions for examining the effect of coresident males on male vigilance behavior (social and non-social).
