In his panoramic view of French society in the wake of the Franco-Prussian war, Emile Zola created a clear definition of decadence by associating it with indulgence and the loss of control. However, his depiction of material excess was to be stylistic not thematic, the tone moral not moralistic, as he evinced the mechanism of that decadence.
