Emperipolesis of neutrophils by dysmorphic megakaryocytes

American Journal of Hematology, 1982
AbstractNeutrophil engulfment by megakaryocytes was observed within 20 to 30% of megakaryocytes from two children: one with metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma, the other with fever of unknown origin. Other cell types and neutrophil precursors were not observed within megakaryocytes.

Distinctive Alterations in the Emperipolesis between Neutrophils and Megakaryocytes from the Bone Marrow of Gata1low Mice Documented By Time-Lapse Observations

Blood
The presence in the bone marrow from patients with myelofibrosis, the most severe of the Ph-negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms, of naked nuclei of megakaryocytes (MK) supposedly originated by para-apoptosis induced by pathological emperipolesis ...

Emperipolesis of lymphocytes by mesothelial cells in pleural effusion involved by T‐lymphoblastic lymphoma

Diagnostic Cytopathology, 2020
Emperipolesis is a physiologic or pathologic phenomenon characterized by the presence of intact viable cells within the cytoplasm of another cell. It has been described in normal tissues and in a variety of inflammatory and neoplastic lesions such as ...

Emperipolesis in pleural fluid mesothelial cells. A phenomenon not associated with Rosai-Dorfman disease, report of a case

Ultrastructural Pathology
Emperipolesis is a cell-within-cell phenomenon distinct from phagocytosis more often described in Rosai-Dorfman disease, where usually lymphocytes or other bone marrow cells (plasma cells, erythroblasts or neutrophils) are entirely surrounded but not ...

Emperipolesis, entosis and beyond: Dance with fate

Cell Research, 2008
Study of cell-in-cell phenomena began with the desire to understand the complex phenotype, which stemmed from Lewis' observation of non-phagocytotic process of cell-eating-cell in 1925 1. Humble et al. coined the term “emperipolesis” (from the Greek, wandering round about within) in 1950s, to define the heterogeneous cell-in-cell phenomena when they ...

Lymphocyte Emperipolesis in Human Glial Cells

Cell Adhesion and Communication, 1993
Astrocytes have been observed to contain intact, viable lymphocytes within their cytoplasm (emperipolesis) in multiple sclerosis plaques and some brain tumors. This study characterizes the adhesive, emperipoletic and phagocytic properties of glial cells in culture.

Emperipolesis and Annulate Lamellae in Erythroleukaemia

Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1983
The bone marrow in the erythraemic phase of 2 erythroleukaemic patients was studied electron microscopically.Emperipolesis of erythrocytes as well as annulate lamellae were revealed in the cytoplasm of the erythroblasts of these cases. It is assumed that these findings show a high rate of erythroblastic proliferation.

Emperipolesis and S100 expression may be seen in cutaneous xanthogranulomas: A multi‐institutional observation

Journal of cutaneous pathology, 2018
Cutaneous Rosai‐Dorfman disease (RDD) can be difficult to distinguish from other non‐Langerhans cell histiocytoses, particularly xanthogranuloma (XG).

Inflammatory Myxohyaline Tumor with Massive Emperipolesis

Pathology - Research and Practice, 2002
We report on a 36-year-old man with a recurrent mass on the thenar side of the right hand. Against the background of dense inflammation, inflammatory malignant fibrous histiocytoma was first diagnosed, but typical morphologic features in the recurrent tumor led to a correction of the diagnosis--inflammatory myxohyaline tumor.

Extensive Emperipolesis of Neoplastic Lymphocytes by Mesothelial Cells in Pleural Effusion Cytology in a Case of a Mediastinal T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma: A Rare but Diagnostically Useful Phenomenon

Acta Cytologica, 2019
Emperipolesis is a biological process defined by the presence of an intact cell within the cytoplasm of another cell. In pleural fluid cytology, the phenomenon is very rare but has already been described in B-cell lymphoma. Here, we report the first case
