Product differentiation in the fruit industry: Lessons from trademarked apples

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
Abstract We derive price premiums for patented or trademarked apple varieties, also known as “club apples,” compared to open‐variety apples. We use an expansive retail scanner dataset, along with unique data on apple taste characteristics, to estimate monthly club apple premiums for 2008–2018.

Improved Part Segmentation Performance by Optimising Realism of Synthetic Images using Cycle Generative Adversarial Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
In this paper we report on improved part segmentation performance using convolutional neural networks to reduce the dependency on the large amount of manually annotated empirical images. This was achieved by optimising the visual realism of synthetic agricultural images. In Part I, a cycle consistent generative adversarial network was applied to ...

Empirical Normalization for Quadratic Discriminant Analysis and Classifying Cancer Subtypes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We introduce a new discriminant analysis method (Empirical Discriminant Analysis or EDA) for binary classification in machine learning. Given a dataset of feature vectors, this method defines an empirical feature map transforming the training and test data into new data with components having Gaussian empirical distributions.

Beyond subsistence? The role of rural cooperatives in driving smallholder commercialization in Ethiopia

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
Abstract The transition from subsistence to market‐oriented agriculture holds the potential to boost rural economic progress and improve the well‐being of the rural poor in developing countries. Despite this potential, there is limited understanding of the key drivers for smallholder commercialization. In this study, we utilize comprehensive three‐wave

Empirical likelihood for linear models with spatial errors [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
For linear models with spatial errors, the empirical likelihood ratio statistics are constructed for the parameters of the models. It is shown that the limiting distributions of the empirical likelihood ratio statistics are chi-squared distributions, which are used to construct confidence regions for the parameters of the models.

Trade and empire [PDF]

Introduction: the rise and fall of European mercantilism At the start of the first millennium, western Europe was the most peripheral region in Eurasia. Like Africa, its exports largely consisted of forest products and slaves, and it had direct economic links with just two other Eurasian regions – eastern Europe and the Islamic world.

The impact of the Russia–Ukraine war on stock prices, profits and perceptions in the food supply chain

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
Abstract The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 had profound consequences for the global economy. As both countries are major commodity exporters, the food value chain was also affected. This study investigates the impact of the invasion on stock prices, profitability and sentiments of agribusinesses along the food supply chain by using an ...

Empirical processes of dependent random variables [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2004
Empirical processes for stationary, causal sequences are considered. We establish empirical central limit theorems for classes of indicators of left half lines, absolutely continuous functions and piecewise differentiable functions. Sample path properties of empirical distribution functions are also discussed.
