A Philosophical Analysis of Causality and Correlation—The Debate on Causality between Hume and Bayes

open access: yesComputer Sciences & Mathematics Forum, 2023
In response to Hume’s challenge to causation, Kant and Bayes made two oriented responses, each addressing an aspect of Hume’s problem. Kant answered the question of cause and effect as an empirical possibility, which makes the certainty and necessity of ...

Approximate Bayesian Model Selection with the Deviance Statistic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Bayesian model selection poses two main challenges: the specification of parameter priors for all models, and the computation of the resulting Bayes factors between models.

Dual‐Ligand Metal‐Organic Frameworks via In Situ Amidoxime Engineering for Selective Ion Separation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by microbial ion‐trapping mechanisms, a mild and universal strategy is developed to construct highly porous amidoxime‐functionalized MOFs. DFT calculations and molecular force measurements reveal that the dual‐ligand amidoxime configuration significantly strengthens Ga(III) affinity.

A nonparametric empirical Bayes framework for large-scale multiple testing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We propose a flexible and identifiable version of the two-groups model, motivated by hierarchical Bayes considerations, that features an empirical null and a semiparametric mixture model for the non-null cases.

Microfluidic Engineering of Chitosan‐Coated Nanoemulsions for Controlled Release and Stability in Space Pharmaceutics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Microfluidic engineering enables the fabrication of chitosan‐coated, melatonin‐loaded nanoemulsions with controlled release and enhanced physicochemical stability for space pharmaceutics. Interfacial biopolymer coating modulates droplet behavior under accelerated thermal stress and simulated microgravity.

Improved naive Bayes classification algorithm for traffic risk management

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, 2021
Naive Bayesian classification algorithm is widely used in big data analysis and other fields because of its simple and fast algorithm structure. Aiming at the shortcomings of the naive Bayes classification algorithm, this paper uses feature weighting and

Genetic heritability as a tool to evaluate the precision of 24-hour recall dietary questionnaire variables in UK Biobank

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2023
A variety of statistical approaches in nutritional epidemiology have been developed to enhance the precision of dietary variables derived from longitudinal questionnaires. Correlation with biomarkers is often used to assess the relative validity of these

Classical vs. Bayesian methods for linear system identification: point estimators and confidence sets

open access: yes, 2015
This paper compares classical parametric methods with recently developed Bayesian methods for system identification. A Full Bayes solution is considered together with one of the standard approximations based on the Empirical Bayes paradigm.

Microarrays, Empirical Bayes and the Two-Groups Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The classic frequentist theory of hypothesis testing developed by Neyman, Pearson and Fisher has a claim to being the twentieth century's most influential piece of applied mathematics.

Factors Driving Battery and Solar Purchase Decision of Residents: a Behavioural Choice Experiment Using a Hybrid Discrete Choice and Latent Variable Model

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
This article explores what drives households to adopt solar PV and battery systems in South East Queensland. Using hybrid discrete choice experiments, it reveals distinct adopter profiles and highlights cost, system size, and energy independence as key motivators.
