Langmuir, 2013
In building construction, structural elements, such as lattice girders, are positioned specifically to support the mainframe of a building. This arrangement provides additional structural hierarchy, facilitating the transfer of load to its foundation while keeping the building weight down. We applied the same concept when synthesizing hierarchical open-

Emulsion templated vesicles with symmetric or asymmetric membranes
Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2017Emulsion droplets with well-controlled topologies are used as templates for forming vesicles with either symmetric or asymmetric membranes. This review summarizes the available technology to produce these templates, the strategies and critical parameters involved in the transformation of emulsion droplets into vesicles, and the properties of the ...

Kinetics of Colloidal Templating Using Emulsion Drop Consolidation
Langmuir, 2007The emulsion templating of ordered colloidal microsphere assemblies by Manoharan et al. involves a consolidation process where dispersed phase fluid is transported from droplets into a continuous phase. Consolidation can be approximated as a diffusion process with moving boundaries.

Emulsion templated open porous membranes for protein purification
Journal of Chromatography A, 2011Approximately 25 cm×25 cm large sheets of crosslinked highly porous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate-co-ethylhexyl methacrylate) membranes with an average thicknesses between 285 and 565 μm were prepared by casting a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) containing monomers onto glass substrates and subsequent polymerisation ...

Hybrid hollow microspheres templated from double Pickering emulsions
Chemical Communications, 2010Hybrid hollow microspheres are fabricated successfully from double emulsions stabilized by single-component amphiphilic silica nanoparticles, which were formed and partially modified in situ at the interface of water-in-oil emulsions.

Tailoring the morphology of emulsion-templated porous polymers
Soft Matter, 2006Methods with which to tailor the morphology of polystyrene-based emulsion-templated (PolyHIPE) materials are presented. Increasing the temperature of the aqueous phase used to prepare the parent emulsion leads to an increase in average void and interconnect size in the resulting porous material.

Emulsion Templated Scaffolds that Include Gelatin and Glycosaminoglycans
Biomacromolecules, 2008Gelatin is one of the most commonly used biopolymer for creating cellular scaffolds due to its innocuous nature. To create stable gelatin scaffolds at physiological temperature (37 degrees C), chemical cross-linking is a necessary step. In a previous paper (Biomacromolecules 2006, 7, 3059-3068), cross-linking was carried out by either radical ...

Emulsion-Templated Liquid Core−Polymer Shell Microcapsule Formation
Langmuir, 2009The fabrication of hollow microspheres to encapsulate functional molecules, such as drugs, insecticides, and proteins, is of ever-increasing importance. Many chemical and physicochemical methods have been tested for various specific encapsulations, but most of them have not been developed into an industrial process.

Synthesis and applications of emulsion-templated porous materials
Soft Matter, 2005This review describes the use of macroemulsions as templates for the production of porous materials. We focus on the use of high internal phase emulsions in order to produce interconnected open porous structures. The review encompasses porous hydrophobic polymers, hydrophilic polymers, composites, silica, metal oxides, and metals.
