Clinical epidemiology, determinants, and outcomes of viral encephalitis in Ghana; a cross-sectional study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Viral encephalitis is a rare, yet severe neurological disorder. It poses a significant public health threat due to its high morbidity and mortality. Despite the disproportionate burden of the disease in impoverished African countries, the true extent of ...

The Antiviral Activity of Polyphenols

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, EarlyView.
Polyphenols demonstrate remarkable antiviral properties by effectively disrupting multiple biochemical processes essential for viral replication. ABSTRACT Polyphenols are secondary metabolites produced by a large variety of plants. These compounds that comprise the class of phenolic acids, stilbenes, lignans, coumarins, flavonoids, and tannins have a ...

Viral Encephalitis of Unknown Cause: Current Perspective and Recent Advances

open access: yesViruses, 2017
Viral encephalitis causes acute inflammation of the brain parenchyma and is a significant cause of human morbidity and mortality. Although Herpes Simplex encephalitis is the most frequent known cause of fatal sporadic encephalitis in humans, an ...

Pterostilbene Exhibits Broad‐Spectrum Antiviral Activity by Targeting the Enterovirus Capsid, Inactivating Viral Particles, Blocking Viral Binding, and Protecting Mice From Lethal EV‐A71 Challenge

open access: yesPhytotherapy Research, EarlyView.
Pterostilbene (Pte) binds to the VP1 hydrophobic pocket of enteroviruses, stabilizing the viral capsid and preventing uncoating and RNA release. In vitro, Pte inactivates virions and impairs viral attachment, entry, and replication. In vivo, oral administration of Pte in hSCARB2‐transgenic mice reduces clinical symptoms and improves survival ...

Influence of salt and viral protein charge distribution on encapsidation of single-stranded viral RNA molecules [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2008
We examine the limits on viral composition that are set by the electrostatic interactions effected by the charge on the viral proteins, the single-stranded viral RNA molecule and monovalent salt ions in the solution. Within the mean-field model of viral energetics we demonstrate the prime importance of the salt concentration for the assembly of a virus.

Recurrent herpes simplex virus encephalitis with presumptive Human Herpesvirus 6 chromosomal integration

open access: yesIDCases, 2023
Viral encephalitis can lead to encephalopathy, epileptic activity, focal neurological deficits, and death. Prompt recognition and a high index of clinical suspicion can lead to early initiation of appropriate management.
