Maximum Likelihood de novo reconstruction of viral populations using paired end sequencing data [PDF]
We present MLEHaplo, a maximum likelihood de novo assembly algorithm for reconstructing viral haplotypes in a virus population from paired-end next generation sequencing (NGS) data. Using the pairing information of reads in our proposed Viral Path Reconstruction Algorithm (ViPRA), we generate a small subset of paths from a De Bruijn graph of reads that

Serological Evidence of Cetacean Morbillivirus Infection in Common Bottlenose Dolphins in Japan
ABSTRACT This study revealed that 41.9% of wild‐born Japanese captive dolphins (18 out of 43 dolphins) have neutralizing antibodies specific to cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV). This finding indicates a widespread yet undetected CeMV infection among wild dolphins in the waters around Japan, occurring without notable epidemic or mass mortality of dolphins.

Management of acute viral encephalitis in Brazil
The appropriate management of acute viral encephalitis is a challenge. Clinical picture includes general symptoms and a wide range of neurological signs. Etiological diagnosis cannot be performed only by clinical means and depends on neuroimaging studies

Revealing patterns in HIV viral load data and classifying patients via a novel machine learning cluster summarization method [PDF]
HIV RNA viral load (VL) is an important outcome variable in studies of HIV infected persons. There exists only a handful of methods which classify patients by viral load patterns. Most methods place limits on the use of viral load measurements, are often specific to a particular study design, and do not account for complex, temporal variation.

Men who have sex with men (MSM), with a median age of 32 (27–37) years, from China's coastal or developed regions, are the “main mpox‐affected” population. HIV‐positive mpox patients showed more severe manifestations, with elevated aspartate transaminase and C‐reactive protein levels, reduced CD4+ T and NK (natural killer) cell counts versus HIV ...

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Encephalitis in Woman, Taiwan
We report an unusual case of pandemic (H1N1) 2009–related encephalitis in an immunocompetent woman. Although rare cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 associated with encephalitis have been reported previously, in this patient, direct viral invasion of the ...

Lords of the flies: dipteran migrants are diverse, abundant and ecologically important
ABSTRACT Insect migrants are hugely abundant, with recent studies identifying the megadiverse order Diptera as the major component of many migratory assemblages. Despite this, their migratory behaviour has been widely overlooked in favour of more ‘charismatic’ migrant insects such as butterflies, dragonflies, and moths.
