Nigropallidal Encephalomalacia in Horses in Colorado
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1970SUMMARY An impaired ability to prehend water and feed was observed in a 3-year-old mare at pasture in western Colorado. A clinical diagnosis of nigropallidal encephalomalacia was confirmed by gross findings at necropsy. Yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis L.), a previously reported cause of the disease, could not be found in the pasture.

Journal of Computed Tomography, 1986A case of multicystic encephalomalacia is presented, demonstrating postischemic maldevelopment in the cerebrum on serial computed tomography scans. The developmental features of multicystic encephalomalacia are discussed, as well as migration abnormalities such as encephaloclastic porencephaly and agenetic porencephaly.

In many instances, these problems have occurred even though adequate levels of vitamin E and selenium were present in the feed (3).
