Bio‐Inspired Synthesis of Macroporous Single Crystal Particles as Scattering Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A general strategy is presented that delivers unique, single‐crystal microparticles that combine submicron macroporosity and uniform particle shapes. A bioinspired approach is used to occlude three distinct types of additives – polystyrene microspheres, polymer vesicles and amino acids – within calcite single crystals, and subsequent thermal annealing ...

Interstitium‐Mimicking Porous Alveolar Membranes Enable Physiologic Aerosol Transport and Distinct Acute‐Chronic Lung Injury Responses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An interstitium‐mimicking membrane combines three‐dimensional alveolar geometry, high pore interconnectivity, and mechanical compliance to overcome transport limitations of conventional lung‐on‐chip barriers. The resulting platform supports physiologic aerosol transport, quantitative analysis of cross‐barrier particle movement, and reveals divergent ...

Implantable Ionic Memristors Based on Natural Polymer Heterojunctions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report an implantable natural polymer‐based ionic memristor composed of hyaluronic acid, chitosan, and PDMS. The device achieved 98.94% accuracy in MNIST classification while reducing training time by 36.8% compared with a conventional artificial neural network (ANN).

Active vibration control of doubly-curved panels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This thesis considers active control of the vibration of doubly-curved panels. Such panels are widely used in vehicles such as cars and aircraft, whose vibration is becoming more problematic as the weight of these vehicles is reduced to control their CO2

Stochastically Generated Digital Twins of 3D Solid‐State Electrolyte Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A stochastic model and validation suite were developed to produce the highest fidelity computer‐generated (Digital Twin) microstructures of random porous tape‐cast solid‐state battery architectures across µm to mm feature sizes from FIB‐SEM to X‐Ray µCT, respectively.

States of Enclosure: An Intersectional Account of the Digital Enclosure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
As theorized by Mark Andrejevic, the “digital enclosure” describes a surveillance system in which users rely on privatized communication networks, information technologies, and data storage facilities to access and manage an array of goods and services ...

Versatile Pneumatic Twisted Coiled Actuators Enabled by Fiber‐Polymer Composite Fabrication

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work reports composite Pneumatic Twisted Coiled Actuators with embedded Kevlar fibers that convert pneumatic or hydraulic pressure into powerful linear motion. A novel precise manufacturing technique is used to systematically explore how design variables influence actuator mechanics and dynamics.
