An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

End-of-Life Care in Critical Condition

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Public Health, 2015
The article presents an overview of palliative care, which is defined as medical and other services that are offered to terminally ill patients in an effort to ease their physical and psychological pain and any disease associated symptoms. A discussion of misconceptions which members of the general public and medical professionals have about the terms ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

End-to-end Learning for Automomous Crop Row-following

open access: yes, 2019
For robotic technology to be adopted within the agricultural domain, there is a need for low-cost systems that can be flexibly deployed across a wide variety of crop types, environmental conditions, and planting methods, without extensive re-engineering.

Dynamic anoxic ferruginous conditions during the end-Permian mass extinction and recovery

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Oceanic anoxia is invoked for driving the Permo-Triassic Mass Extinction, but the timing, distribution and chemical state are poorly understood. Here, the authors show that fluctuations of anoxic, non-sulfidic (ferruginous) conditions were important for ...

An investigation of secondary flow in a turbine blade with end wall profiling [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Secondary flows have been long recognised as a significant form of loss mechanism in turbomachinery. They have a major influence over the performance of the blade rows since they cause unsteadiness in the mainstream flow.

Linear Chain with Free End Boundary Conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
The problem of energy propagation through a one-dimensional open-ended finite chain is critically reexamined. Free end boundary conditions are imposed and quantum-field-theory operators, consistent with these boundary conditions, are derived for both the

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Vortex-Induced Vibrations of a Square Cylinder with Damped Free-End Conditions

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2013
The authors report the results of vortex-induced vibrations of a square cylinder in a wind tunnel. This constitutes a high mass ratio environment. The square cylinder is mounted in the wind tunnel in such a fashion that it only performs rigid body ...

No difference in effects of ‘PACE steps to success’ palliative care program for nursing home residents with and without dementia: a pre-planned subgroup analysis of the seven-country PACE trial

open access: yesBMC Palliative Care, 2021
Background ‘PACE Steps to Success’ is a multicomponent training program aiming to integrate generalist and non-disease-specific palliative care in nursing homes. This program did not improve residents’ comfort in the last week of life, but it appeared to
