Drought increases Norway spruce susceptibility to the Eurasian spruce bark beetle and its associated fungi

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 242, Issue 3, Page 1000-1017, May 2024.
Summary Drought affects the complex interactions between Norway spruce, the bark beetle Ips typographus and associated microorganisms. We investigated the interplay of tree water status, defense and carbohydrate reserves with the incidence of bark beetle attack and infection of associated fungi in mature spruce trees.

Induced terpene accumulation in Norway spruce inhibits bark beetle colonization in a dose-dependent manner [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Tree-killing bark beetles (Coleoptera, Scolytinae) are among the most economically and ecologically important forest pests in the northern hemisphere.

Fungal associates of the tree-killing bark beetle, Ips typographus, vary in virulence, ability to degrade conifer phenolics and influence bark beetle tunneling behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The bark beetle Ips typographus carries numerous fungi that could be assisting the beetle in colonizing live Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees. Phenolic defenses in spruce phloem are degraded by the beetle's major tree-killing fungus Endoconidiophora ...

Data_Sheet_1_Bark Beetle Attack History Does Not Influence the Induction of Terpene and Phenolic Defenses in Mature Norway Spruce (Picea abies) Trees by the Bark Beetle-Associated Fungus Endoconidiophora polonica.docx

open access: yes, 2022
Terpenes and phenolics are important constitutive and inducible conifer defenses against bark beetles and their associated fungi. In this study, the inducible defenses of mature Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees with different histories of attack by the ...
