Endocrinology @ the nobels

open access: yesIndian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2012
For practitioners of endocrinology, ours is the most challenging, interesting, and inclusive of all medical specialties. Covering the entire body from head to toe, and sharing common ground with specialties as diverse as oncology and dermatology, the study of hormones straddles the vast expanse of medical science as no other superspecialty can.

Adaptive Antioxidant Nanomedicines Inhibit Ferroptosis in Renal Tubular Epithelial Cells to Alleviate Diabetic Kidney Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, an adaptive antioxidant nanodrug (AAN) is developed through the self‐polymerization of L‐selenocysteine. The AAN exhibits dual functionalities: antioxidant activity (scavenging reactive oxygen species) and mitochondrial targeting. Moreover, the released selenium (Se) participates in the synthesis of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), which

Advances in Medical Devices for Augmented Acupuncture Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Traditional acupuncture therapy faces several challenges in clinical applications, such as complex operation procedures and prolonged therapeutic periods. By incorporating physical stimulations and drug delivery technologies, engineered acupuncture needles (EANs) can enhance therapeutic efficacy, improve patient compliance, as well as mitigate ...

The Long Noncoding RNA ΒFaar Promotes White Adipose Tissue Browning and Prevents Diet‐Induced Obesity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
βFaar selectively targets and inhibits the GTPase activity of the RAB18 protein, thereby reducing LD volume. Conversely, βFaar promotes nuclear translocation of the transcription factor IRF4 in inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT), facilitating the browning of white adipose tissue and attenuating body fat accumulation.

Water, Collagen, and Lipid Content in the Human Skin and Muscles Assessed with Near‐Infrared Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy and Multi‐Spectral Optoacoustic Tomography

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Authors present a novel approach combining multispectral optoacoustic tomography and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for noninvasive assessment of body composition, including water, lipid, and collagen in skin and muscles. Its high molecular and spatial specificity offers improved diagnostic potential for conditions like obesity and sarcopenia ...

BRD4 Signaling Maintains the Differentiated State of β Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The comprehensive exploration revealed the critical role of BRD4 in β cells. BRD4 plays a fundamental role in maintaining β cell differentiation because both long‐term and acute BRD4 deficiency result in a reduction in insulin secretion and downregulation of differentiation markers.

Macrophage Zc3h12c Limits Tissue Inflammation and Injury via Alternative Splicing of Pre‐mRNA

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work defines the context‐dependent function of Zc3h12c in macrophages using the Tnfrsf11a‐Cre system. It reveals Zc3h12c's dual mechanism—regulating RNA degradation and alternative splicing—with STAT1 as a key target. The findings elucidate a novel post‐transcriptional pathway and identify STAT1 isoforms as potential therapeutic targets for kidney

Development and evaluation of a health‐related quality‐of‐life tool for dogs with Cushing's syndrome

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2019
Background Clinical signs and consequences of Cushing's syndrome are likely to impact upon a dog's life. Quantification of this impact on a dog's health‐related quality‐of‐life (HRQoL) could contribute to optimized disease management.
