Role of P-selectin in platelet sequestration in pulmonary capillaries during endotoxemia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Background: There is growing evidence that platelets accumulate in the lung and contribute to the pathogenesis of acute lung injury during endotoxemia.

Alcohol‐induced altered glycans in human tracheal epithelial cells promote bacterial adhesion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Alcohol induces altered glycans to promote bacteria adhesion. Heavy alcohol drinking is known to increase the risk of bacterial pneumonia. However, the link between alcohol levels and risk of infection remains underexplored. Recently, we found that alcohol induced α2‐6sialo mucin O‐glycans in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells, which mediated the ...

Specular Microscopic Features of Corneal Endothelial Vacuolation

open access: yesJournal of Ophthalmic & Vision Research, 2011
Purpose: To introduce a specular microscopic reference image for endothelial vacuolation in donated corneas. Methods: Two corneas from a donor with diffuse, round to oval dark areas at the endothelial level on slit lamp biomicroscopy and one normal ...

Accumulation of tissue factor in endothelial cells induces cell apoptosis, mediated through p38 and p53 activation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We previously reported that high levels of tissue factor (TF) can induce cellular apoptosis in endothelial. In this study, TF-mediated mechanisms of induction of apoptosis were explored.

Specular Microscopy of Corneal Endothelial Cells in Rabbits.

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Medical Science, 1995
The corneal endothelia of 19 male and 19 female Japanese White rabbits (age: 6 to 15 months) were examined with a contact-type specular microscope under general anesthesia. The specular microscopy showed uniform-sized, pentagonal or hexagonal endothelia arranged regularly on the innermost layer of the cornea.

Dapagliflozin prevents methylglyoxal‐induced retinal cell death in ARPE‐19 cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Diabetic macular oedema is a diabetes complication of the eye, which may lead to permanent blindness. ARPE‐19 are human retinal cells used to study retinal diseases and potential therapeutics. Methylglyoxal is a compound increased in uncontrolled diabetes due to elevated blood glucose.

Adhesion and spreading of cultured endothelial cells on modified and unmodified poly(ethylene terephthalate): a morphological study [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
The in vitro adhesion and spreading of human endothelial cells (HEC) on hydrophobic poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP) and moderately wettable tissue culture polyethylene terephthalate) (TCPETP) were studied with light microscopy and electron microscopy.

Brillouin Microscopy Visualizes Centralized Corneal Edema in Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy [PDF]

open access: yesCornea, 2019
Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of using Brillouin microscopy for assessment of corneal edema in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD). Brillouin microscopy analyzes the frequency shift of light inelastically scattered by naturally occurring acoustic waves in a small volume of tissue.

Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) regulates trophoblast syncytialization through organelle stress–induced cellular senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The inhibition of mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) impairs syncytialization and induces cellular senescence via mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress in human trophoblast stem cells, elevating sFlt1/PlGF levels, a hallmark of placental dysfunction in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
