Energy security and energy access: distinct and interconnected challenges
Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, 2011This issue addresses two distinct yet interconnected global energy challenges: energy security and energy access. Energy security is primarily a national level concern whereas energy access is largely a problem at the household level. However, these levels are not isolated from each other.

Energy Poverty and Energy Access
2020Abstract This chapter makes an effort to clarify terminology, identifying three meanings of energy poverty (fuel poverty, the use of polluting fuels, and the lack of energy efficiency). A particular aim of the chapter is the distinction between energy poverty and energy access.

Modern energy services are essential to human development, productivity, competitiveness, and economic growth [1–3]. Despite gains over the last three decades, based on 2010 data, about 1.3 billion people do not have access to electricity and about 2.6 billion people still rely on traditional biomass fuels such as fuelwood, charcoal, agricultural waste,

One critical aspect of the global transition to a low-carbon energy system is the provision of an adequate level of energy services to a large and growing proportion of humanity. The energy poor, living primarily off any electrical grid, offer a unique opportunity and new markets for a modular concept for energy access.

This chapter describes a particular rural configuration of Internet infrastructure in Zambia. It shows that access in this location is contingent on water resources, which not only generate hydroelectricity for the Zambian power grid but are also necessary for prospective Internet users' everyday survival in the community of Macha.

Energy harvesting cooperative multiple access under energy storage losses
2017 25th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2017For a two-user cooperative multiple access channel with energy harvesting transmitters, we formulate and solve the achievable departure region maximization problem under finite battery capacities and energy storage losses. Treating delay constrained and delay tolerant cooperation scenarios separately, we investigate the dependence of the optimum ...

The quest for energy security is the most significant impetus for Japan to engage with Muslim Asia for the last half century. This chapter argues that energy security is essential to Japan’s ontological security, and thus, it is vitally important that the energy suppliers in Muslim Asia must be secured to maintain the steady flow of energy resources ...

Widening energy access in Africa: Towards energy transition
Energy Policy, 2012The discussion to widen access to modern energy services has been influential in shaping some of the discussions on energy at the international level. The practice of widening modern energy services access to the poor in Africa is complex, and exacerbated by the dual nature of the energy system across Sub-Saharan Africa where traditional and modern ...
