Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Estimating the seasonal energy balance in Asian black bears and associated factors

open access: yesEcosphere, 2019
Energy balance (i.e., energy intake minus energy expenditure) is an essential factor when evaluating an animal's nutritional state. We aimed to identify periods of the year that are most important for Asian black bears (Ursus thibetanus) in terms of ...

Refinement of amino‐acid conformation vs. difference density maps in time‐resolved serial femtosecond crystallography data analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The dFoCC pipeline starts with observed DED and resting‐state coordinates, which are then used to generate a library of triggered states. Correlation analysis of the calculated DED features of each candidate vs observed DED permits quantitative evaluation of candidate structural quality.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Prediction equation for estimating total daily energy requirements of special operations personnel

open access: yesJournal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2018
Background Special Operations Forces (SOF) engage in a variety of military tasks with many producing high energy expenditures, leading to undesired energy deficits and loss of body mass.

Establishing the benefits of protein intake during energy balance and energy restriction to improve weight loss

open access: yes, 2017
This thesis examined the effects of dietary protein manipulation during energy balance and energy restriction on physiological and behavioural mechanisms influencing body weight.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

The Energy Balance of Corn Ethanol: An Update

open access: yes
Studies conducted since the late 1970s have estimated the net energy value (NEV) of corn ethanol. However, variations in data and assumptions used among the studies have resulted in a wide range of estimates.

Energy and motorization: scenarios for China's 2005-2020 energy balance [PDF]

open access: yes

Aquaporin‐3 and aquaporin‐5 impact the development of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma spheroids

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of the role of aquaporin‐3 (AQP3) and aquaporin‐5 (AQP5) in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Both proteins are upregulated in PDAC and are associated with tumor progression and metastatic potential. Silencing AQP3 or AQP5 in PDAC spheroids results in decreased diameter, area, and overall growth, underscoring their key ...
