Strong motion duration and earthquake magnitude relationships [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Earthquake duration is the total time of ground shaking from the arrival of seismic waves until the return to ambient conditions. Much of this time is at relatively low shaking levels which have little effect on seismic structural response and on ...

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

The application of the K-class system in mine seismicity

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
As seismology has evolved, scientists have developed various earthquake magnitude scales tailored for specific scenarios, including Richter magnitude (ML) for local, moderate quakes, moment magnitude (Mw) for large-scale seismic events, energy magnitude (

Magnetar crust electron capture for $$^{55}$$ 55 Co and $$^{56}$$ 56 Ni

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2018
Based on the relativistic mean-field effective interaction principle and random phase approximation theory in superstrong magnetic fields (SMFs), we present an analysis of the influence of SMFs on the electron Fermi energy, nuclear blinding energy ...

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

A Review of Water Heating Technologies: An Application To The South African Context [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Published Articleup to 40% of their total energy be allotted to the heating of water. The implementation of energy efficient or renewable energy source technologies, for the main purpose of heating water, may assist in reducing the magnitude of the ...

Interpreting the effects of DNA polymerase variants at the structural level

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using MAVISp and molecular dynamics simulations, we analyzed over 60 000 missense variants in POLE and POLD1 from ClinVar, COSMIC, cBioPortal, and saturation mutagenesis. Identified mechanistic indicators, including stability, binding, and long‐range, enable structural interpretation, providing ACMG‐like evidence for possible reclassification of VUS ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Seasonal variation in food pattern but not in energy and nutrient intakes of rural Beninese school-aged children

open access: yes, 2009
Background: Inadequate energy and nutrient intakes are a major nutritional problem in developing countries. A recent study in Beninese school-aged children in different seasons revealed a high prevalence of stunting and poor iron status that might be ...
