Superficial thrombophlebitis is a common process. It usually affects lower limbs, but sometimes appears in rather special locations such as the anterior wall of the chest or in the penis, and is called Mondor's disease. It is important to identify it in order to exclude breast malignancy, with which it is often associated.

Mondor’s disease is a superficial thrombophlebitis of the thoracic wall frequently affecting the female breast. In most cases the aetiology is unknown, although operation, direct and indirect trauma, muscular effort, is known as causative factors. Spontaneous resolution occurs in 6 weeks to 6 months, and no treatment apart from observation is required.
