Increased Brown Adipose Tissue Thermogenesis in Phenylketonuria

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
In phenylketonuria (PKU), elevated phenylalanine (Phe) increases hepatic fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and thyroid hormones, enhancing brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis in patients. Central FGF21 reproduces this phenotype in rodents via reduced hypothalamic AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity in the ventromedial nucleus of the ...

Structural Analysis and Inhibitor Modeling of Bacterioferritin From Brucella abortus

open access: yesProteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, Volume 94, Issue 6, Page 1170-1181, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Iron homeostasis in various pathogenic bacteria is regulated by bacterioferritins (Bfr) which function to store Fe3+ and release Fe2+ as needed for metabolic processes. The Bfr structure consists of 18 kDa subunits in which dimer pairs bind a heme molecule and are assembled into a highly symmetrical 24‐meric spherical structure with an ...

Mitochondrial Transplantation as a New Therapeutic Approach Against Cardiac and Renal Consequences in Male Rats With Myocardial Infarction

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. MI is associated with cardiac structural and functional alterations. Among these, cardiac fibrosis may be significantly influenced by mitochondrial dysfunction. We sought to evaluate whether the injection of functional mitochondria from healthy muscle could improve

Thrombospondin‐4 is upregulated in abdominal aortic aneurysm: A vasoprotective response with potential therapeutic relevance

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 12, Page 3321-3339, June 2026.
TSP4 is upregulated in human and experimental AAA. TSP4 knockdown accelerated AAA formation and exacerbated both vascular inflammation and remodelling, emphasizing that TSP4 upregulation may represent a protective response against AAA. Our findings suggest that preserving TSP4 could be a useful strategy in the clinical management of AAA.

Beyond Temperature: Relative Humidity Systematically Shifts Juvenile Thermal Performance and Projected Population Growth in a Malaria Vector

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 6, June 2026.
Understanding how ectotherms respond to environmental change requires accounting for multiple interacting climatic factors; yet relative humidity is rarely integrated with temperature in trait‐based performance frameworks. Using laboratory experiments and an analytic population growth model, we show that humidity systematically modifies juvenile life ...
