Pumphrey to help launch engineering program at Ouachita [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Dr. Norman D. Pumphrey Jr. has been named professor of engineering at Ouachita Baptist University. Pumphrey joins Ouachita faculty in the J.D. Patterson School of Natural Sciences after serving nearly 30 years in the engineering department at Louisiana ...

Static and Dynamic Behavior of Novel Y‐Shaped Sandwich Beams Subjected to Compressive Loadings: Integration of Supervised Learning and Experimentation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the mechanical response of Y‐shaped core sandwich beams under compressive loading is investigated, using deep feed‐forward neural networks (DFNNs) for predictive modeling. The DFNN model accurately captures stress–strain behavior, influenced by design parameters and loading rates.

How the new architectural engineering program criteria differs from the new civil engineering program criteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
There are 17 ABET accredited architectural engineering (AE) programs in the country and over 200 civil engineering (CE) programs. To gain accreditation, a program must meet the ABET general criteria common to every engineering program and specific ...

Bistable Mechanisms 3D Printing for Mechanically Programmable Vibration Control

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a 3D‐printed bistable mechanism integrated into tuned mass dampers (TMDs) for mechanically adaptive passive vibration suppression. Through optimized geometry, the bistable design provides adaptable vibration reduction across a broad range of scenarios, achieving effective vibration mitigation without complex controls or external ...

The Kentucky Department of Highway’s Scholarship Program [PDF]

open access: yes, 1962
The Kentucky Department of Highways was organized in 1912, at that time the field of highway engineering was new, little was actually known about the scientific process of building roads, there were no highway engineers as such.

Fluorinated Graphene‐Coated N95 Respirators for Enhanced Protection against Viral Accumulation and Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a one‐step spray coating approach to coat the fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheet onto the N95 respirators. The spray‐coated superhydrophobic N95 respirators can effectively repel respiratory droplets off instantaneously and prevent SARS‐CoV‐2 virus accumulation on the surface.

Design optimisation of separate-jet exhausts for the next generation of civil aero-engines [PDF]

open access: yesThe Aeronautical Journal, 2018
ABSTRACTThe next generation of civil large aero-engines will employ greater bypass ratios compared with contemporary architectures. This results in higher exchange rates between exhaust performance and specific fuel consumption (SFC). Concurrently, the aerodynamic design of the exhaust is expected to play a key role in the success of future turbofans ...

Narrowband Detection via Charge Collection Narrowing Organic Photodetector Enabled by Low Bandgap Random Terpolymer for Biometric Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A novel low‐bandgap random terpolymer is designed for narrow band detection in charge collection narrowing (CCN) based organic photodetectors. With a relative thin active layer (<1 µm), the CCN‐based devices achieved a narrowband response of 68 nm full‐width‐at‐half‐maximum at 916 nm, together with Responsivity values of 0.13 A W−1 and dark current of ...

Steps to Increase the Reproducibility of Geotechnical Laboratory Test Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Forum papers are thought-provoking opinion pieces or essays founded in fact, sometimes containing speculation, on a civil engineering topic of general interest and relevance to the readership of the journal.
