A new generation of concrete in civil engineering
Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2000Abstract This paper presents current tendencies in the state-of-the-art in research on technology development in a new generation of cement-based concrete. The classification of such concrete and its characteristic physical properties that have been difficult to achieve up to the present time for so-called ordinary concrete are presented.

Three stage generalized flowshop: Scheduling civil engineering projects
Journal of Global Optimization, 1996We model the working of a civil engineering firm concerned with land development as a three stage flexible flowshop with weak chain precedence constraints and where preemption is allowed. The scheduling objective is to minimize the total tardiness for all the projects.

General Education for Civil Engineers: Sustainable Development
Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice, 2008The ABET criteria for engineering programs no longer has a requirement for humanities and social sciences but instead requires a general education component that complements the technical component of the curriculum. Achievement of the outcomes called for in the ABET criteria and the ability to apply the constraints listed in ABET Criterion 3 can be ...

Modeling and generation of seismic ground motion for active control in civil engineering
2015 3rd International Conference on Control, Engineering & Information Technology (CEIT), 2015The Artificial Accelerograms have been developed for assessing the dynamic response of structures. Considering seismological properties of the site are necessary for the best simulation of accelerograms. In a simplified seismic analysis, we model only the strong phase of the seismic signal. The latter is then assumed to be stationary during this period.

Application of microwave aquametry in civil engineering and in power generation
Measurement Science and Technology, 2007The first part of this paper is devoted to microwave moisture-measurement (aquametry), starting with an overview of the work performed by researchers involved in using microwave (or high-frequency electromagnetic) signals for moisture measurement, as well as in non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) of mainly concrete.

A head start for the next generation of civil engineers
Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering, 2015The UK Headstart initiative, which offers 16–17 year olds a chance to spend a week at university on an engineering taster course before making their final degree choice, received over 3000 applications last year – the highest in its 17 year history. Estelle Rowe of EDT reports.

Next Generation Artificial Neural Networks for Civil Engineering
Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, 2006If we measure complexity in these simple terms as the number of primary processing units that can be employed usefully in an application then we can compare today’s general purpose digital computer to the brain of a rabbit comprising in the order of 10 9 neurons, while artificial neural networks have progressed no further than the brain of the humble ...

Civil Engineering Features of Linden Generating Station
Journal of the Power Division, 1958The object of this paper is to set forth the problems which the civil engineer meets and is called upon to solve to make possible the construction of an electric generating station involving the rather unusual conditions which occurred in the construction of the Linden Generating Station of Public Service Electric and Gas Company of New Jersey.

Teaching Sustainability Topics to Attract and Inspire the Next Generation of Civil Engineers
Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice, 2015AbstractRecent natural events such as earthquakes in Japan and storm surge effects in New York have led to the growing interest in sustainable civil engineering. While sustainability topics, such as soil liquefaction and green building design, are typically included within civil engineering programs at the baccalaureate or graduate levels, topics in ...
