Gendered patterns in the construction of physics identity from motivational factors

open access: yesPhysical Review Physics Education Research, 2019
Students’ intentions to persevere and their career choices in science, technology, engineering, and math fields can be impacted by their physics identities. Women are severely underrepresented at all levels in physics and engineering.

Wet Granular Materials

open access: yes, 2006
Most studies on granular physics have focused on dry granular media, with no liquids between the grains. However, in geology and many real world applications (e.g., food processing, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, civil engineering, constructions, and many ...

Engineers in the Physics Classroom

open access: yes, 2018
With shortages of physics teachers in many countries the option to attract engineers for a teaching career has been identified as a potential solution. To ensure in-depth physics teaching, subject knowledge enhancement courses can be offered [1]. We report on the design and implementation of the Dutch subject knowledge enhancement project Natk4all ...

Targeting of PTP4A3 overexpression sensitises HGSOC cells towards chemotherapeutic drugs

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In HGSOC with normal KRAS expression, high PTP4A3 expression regulates autophagy activation. Conversely, in HGSOC with high KRAS expression, KRAS dictates autophagy control, and PTP4A3 is not required. When high PTP4A3 expression is inhibited, HGSOC cells are preferentially sensitised towards DNA‐damaging agents.

High-precision compensation method for the form error of a glass aspheric lens in precision glass molding

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Addressing challenges in controlling viscoelastic shrinkage-induced thermal deformation errors in precision glass molding, this article proposes a mold compensation method that combines the pre-compensation of form error prediction based on ...

Capturing pattern bi-stability dynamics in delay-coupled swarms

open access: yes, 2014
Swarms of large numbers of agents appear in many biological and engineering fields. Dynamic bi-stability of co-existing spatio-temporal patterns has been observed in many models of large population swarms.

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...

Characterizing the epistemological development of physics majors

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Physics Education Research, 2009
Students in introductory physics courses are likely to have views about physics that differ from those of experts. However, students who continue to study physics eventually become experts themselves.
