Metabolic Profiling Reveals a Glycolytic Shift and an IRG1/Itaconate/NF2L2 Axis Regulating Neurotoxic Oxidative Stress in Inflammatory Microglia

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 9, September 2025.
Microglia, the brain's immune cells, change their metabolism depending on whether they are fighting infection or promoting healing. This study shows that during inflammation, microglia increase a molecule called itaconate, which helps reduce harmful stress in the brain while still allowing an immune response.

Exploring the Potential of Zein Nanoparticles in Personalised Cancer Therapy, Highlighting Their Various Methodologies, Applications and Challenges

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 29, Issue 15, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Zein, a corn‐derived prolamine protein, has become a powerful ally in the fight against cancer, particularly non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC.) Its unique attributes, enriched by modifiable hydroxyl and amino groups, have led to the development of advanced functionalised drug delivery systems. Innovative techniques like chemical crosslinking,

Ungulate use before and after utility‐scale solar development

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 3, July–September 2025.
We found multiple lines of evidence that indicate pronghorn use declined near an 80‐MW solar facility. Our study suggests that indirect habitat loss could exacerbate the impacts of solar development on ungulates and potentially complicate the effectiveness of design‐based mitigation measures that assume animals will readily utilize habitats adjacent to

Fast‐Charging Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 15, Issue 26, July 8, 2025.
This review explores strategies to overcome fast‐charging challenges in lithium‐sulfur batteries (LSBs). It covers key techniques to address LiPS shuttling, sluggish kinetics, and dendrite formation. The crucial role of battery components, catalysts, and electrode/separator modifications is analyzed.

Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Cytisus scoparius*

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 7, Page 1877-1933, July 2025.
Broom is an attractive and common native plant across Britain, Ireland and most of Europe, and yet it is considered a harmful and invasive weed around the rest of the world. This is aided by broom thriving on poor dry soils, helped by using green stems for photosynthesis and having root nodules to fix nitrogen.

Neuropathological and cerebrospinal fluid correlates of choroid plexus inflammation in progressive multiple sclerosis

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 35, Issue 4, July 2025.
Graphical representation of the widespread white matter (blue color mask) and grey matter (cortical and deep grey matter; red color mask) demyelination in MS cases characterized by substantial inflammation of the CP (A). The presence of lesions was mainly associated with periventricular white matter and hippocampus areas (A).

Exploring the Role of Microglial Cells in the Gut–Brain Axis Communication: A Systematic Review

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 7, July 2025.
Gut microbiota composition influences brain health through the gut–brain axis by modulating microglial activation states. A balanced microbiota promotes the production of beneficial metabolites like short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which maintain gut barrier integrity and support anti‐inflammatory surveillance microglia, contributing to neuroprotection

Welfare of beef cattle

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract This Scientific Opinion provides an assessment of beef cattle welfare focusing on risks related to flooring, water access, nutrition and feeding, high environmental temperatures, lack of environmental enrichment, lack of outdoor access, minimum space allowance and mixing practices. In addition, risks related to pasture and feedlots, weaning of
