Methionine-enkephalin(met-enkephalin)-, leucine-enkephalin(leu-enkephalin)-, methionine-enkephalin-Arg6-Phe7(met-enkephalin-Arg-Phe)- and methionine-enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8(met-enkephalin-Arg-Gly-Leu)-like immunoreactivities(-LI) were studied in 16 pheochromocytomas by radioimmunoassays (RIAs) for these four opioid peptides. Met-enkephalin-Arg-Phe-LI

Potent tetrapeptide enkephalins
Life Sciences, 1981Abstract Small peptides with opiate-like activity have generally had structures closely resembling that of the opioid pentapeptide enkephalin: Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met-COOH. Single deletions of any one of the amino acids has been demonstrated to reduce opiate activity drastically.

Enkephalins as immunomodulators
International Journal of Immunopharmacology, 1983The protective effects of methionine enkephalin as well as leucine enkephalin were studied in BDF1 mice inoculated with 1 X 10(4) and 1 X 10(2) cells of L1210 murine leukemia. Significant increases in number of survivors were observed in mice treated with enkephalins.

Biosynthesis of the Enkephalins and Enkephalin-Containing Polypeptides
Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology, 1983The biochemical characterization of the enkephalins and the enkephalin-containing polypeptides and their biosynthesis has reached an advanced state. From the structural data showing great similarities between human and beef proenkephalin there is strong evidence for physiological roles for some of the extended enkephalins and for at least two of the ...

Biochemistry of the enkephalins and enkephalin-containing peptides
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1983The enkephalins are present in many tissues not only as the free pentapeptides, but also as internal sequences in larger polypeptides of varying size. Fourteen enkephalin-containing peptides (EC peptides) from beef adrenal medulla were isolated and sequenced, and the presence of a protein that contained several [Met]enkephalin sequences and one of [Leu]

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the identification and distribution of enkephalins and endorphins. The two main methods of detecting and quantitating enkephalins and endorphins used so far are radioimmunoassay and bioassay. In addition, opioid receptor binding assays were originally utilized to detect general opioid activity.

Enkephalin-containing polypeptides are potent inhibitors of enkephalin degradation
Peptides, 1983Enkephalin-containing polypeptides derived from pro-enkephalin A, pro-enkephalin B, or pro-opiomelanocortin were inhibitors of enkephalin degradation by aminoenkephalinases purified from cytosol or membranes. Of the peptides, Argo-Met-enkephalin was the most potent inhibitor for the aminoenkephalinases, with an IC50 of about 0.6 microM, it was more ...

Acetylcholinesterase converts Met5-enkephalin-containing peptides to Met5-enkephalin
Neuroscience Letters, 1988Acetylcholinesterase (AChE; E.C. 3.1.1.7) was incubated with a number of enkephalin-containing neuropeptides found in the bovine adrenal medulla. Met5-enkephalin and Leu5-enkephalin were the most stable of the peptides studied, while precursors of Met5-enkephalin were converted to Met5-enkephalin. AChE is therefore capable of limited peptidase activity

Studies on the nucleotide sequence of cloned DNA complementary to mRNA for preproenkephalin A from adrenal medulla and human pheochromocytoma have revealed that this precursor contains 4 copies of methionine-enkephalin(Met-Enk) and one copy each of leu-enkephalin (Leu-Enk), methionine-enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8(Met-Enk-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8) and methionine ...
