Stability of Drugs with Enteral Nutrient Formulas
DICP, 1990Experiments were performed to determine the chemical stability and compatibility of cephalexin, cimetidine, diazepam, or propranolol with full-strength and half-strength Isocal, Sustacal, and Sustacal HC (Mead Johnson). The enteral nutrient formulas (ENFs) containing the solid or liquid dosage forms were stored at 24°C and samples were taken at times 0,

Specialized formulas for enteral nutrition support
Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1986Enteral or tube feeding is the standard nutritional support modality for patients with a functioning gastrointestinal tract. Expanding knowledge of the role of nutrients in disease has prompted the development of specialized nutrients for patients with specific diseases.

The use of an enteral expert system in the prescription of enteral formulas in a university hospital
Nutrition, 1997A personal computer-based expert system has been developed for the prescription of enteral formulas based on patient-need characteristics. Two hundred twelve inpatients in a university hospital setting were prospectively evaluated to compare the identity and cost of the enteral formula prescribed by the expert system with the identity and cost of the ...

Efficacy of Enteral Nutrition for the Treatment of Pancreatitis Using Standard Enteral Formula
The American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2006Elemental formula delivered distal to the ligament of Treitz has demonstrated efficacy in patients with pancreatitis, presumably by decreasing pancreatic stimulation. Few data exist on the use of standard enteral formula in such patients. This study describes the outcomes of pancreatitis patients managed with long-term standard enteral nutrition (EN ...

Warfarin Bioavailability With Feeding Tubes and Enteral Formula
Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, 2010Background: Earlier literature showed reduced efficacy of warfarin when co‐administered with enteral nutrition formulas through feeding tubes. This study used an in vitro model for gastric administration of warfarin through a feeding tube to evaluate potential causes for reduced warfarin absorption when administered through feeding tubes.

Enteral formula feeds interfere with phenytoin absorption
Brain and Development, 1994Two children treated for status epilepticus had low plasma phenytoin levels during enteral feeding, despite adequate oral dosage. The target range (10-20 mg/l) was achieved when feeds were stopped, or when intravenous phenytoin was used. Enteral feeding may interfere with the absorption of oral phenytoin thereby compromising seizure control.

Microbial contamination of enteral feeding formulas and diarrhea
Nutrition, 2000Twenty-five medical and surgical patients receiving liquid ready-to-use sterile enteral formulas were evaluated prospectively to investigate the relation of diarrhea to serum albumin level, total lymphocyte count, delayed hypersensitivity to purified protein derivative, antibiotic therapy, administration rate and site of enteral formula, and microbial ...

Recovery of phenytoin from an enteral nutrient formula
American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, 1986The recovery of phenytoin from phenytoin oral suspension dispersed in an enteral nutrient formula was determined. The study was conducted in two phases. In phase 1, diluted phenytoin oral suspension was added to 10 1-mL samples of full-strength Osmolite and 10 1-mL samples of a distilled water control solution to produce a theoretical concentration of ...

Enteral Nutrition Formula Selection
Nutrition in Clinical Practice, 2014Many new enteral nutrition (EN) formulas have been created over the past several decades with a variety of intended uses. Although each is intended to promote improved outcomes, research is often unclear and, in many cases, conflicting. It is important to note that EN products are considered medical foods by the U.S.
