Comparative Survival of Indicator Viruses and Enteric Viruses in Seawater and Sediment [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Laboratory studies quantified the relative survival of F+ coliphages, B. fragilis phages, hepatitis A virus, poliovirus, and rotavirus in seawater and seawater-sediment mixtures.

Poliomyelitis and Other Enteric Viruses in Sewage

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Public Health and the Nations Health, 1957
communities of various socioeconomic levels in Erie County and Series A samples, sewage from stages of treatment in Albany and environs. The samples were collected by suspending cheesecloth swabs 3 in flowing sewage for two days (Series A) or for seven days (Series B).

Translating whole‐genome doubling into precision medicine in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Whole‐genome doubling creates a WGD‐positive tumor state characterized by persistent chromosomal instability, karyotypic diversification, and cellular stress. These same biological pressures drive aggressive tumor evolution while exposing therapeutic vulnerabilities, providing a rationale for WGD‐informed precision medicine. Whole‐genome doubling (WGD)

Interferon beta drives therapy resistance in a patient‐derived model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Interferon type 1 (IFN‐1) production and signaling is associated with the acquisition of therapy resistance, following chronic DNA damage, via Interferon‐related DNA damage resistance signature (IRDS) gene expression. An alternative, DNA damage‐independent role of sustained IFN‐1 mediated resistance was identified and characterized by the emergence of ...

Hepatitis E outbreak in the health district of Bocaranga-Koui, Central African Republic, 2018–2019

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Background Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major public health disease causing large outbreaks and sporadic cases of acute hepatitis. We investigated an outbreak of HEV infection that occurred in September 2018 in the health district (HD) of Bocaranga-Koui,

Infantile enteritis viruses: morphogenesis and morphology [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 1975
A new virus was found to be associated with acute gastroenteritis in children. In duodenal biopsies, it was observed infecting only intestinal epithelial cells, and it resembled orbiviruses in its morphogenesis. For diagnsotic purposes the virus was readily demonstrated by negative staining of fecal extracts.

Cancer cell‐intrinsic type 1 interferon: production, signaling, and outcomes within sex‐biased, female malignancies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cell‐autonomous roles of interferon type 1 vary based on duration and intensity. While acute, robust signaling results in cancer cell cytotoxic effects, sustained, low‐level signaling is associated with tumor‐promoting effects. This review summarizes current research of IFN‐1 in cancer and within the clinical setting, with an emphasis on female ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Fate of Human Enteric Viruses (Rotaviruses and Entero Viruses) in Sewage after Primary Sedimentation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
A wastewater treatment plant, which treats sewage by either mechanical primary sedimentation or lime coagulation, was used for modelling the fate of human enteric viruses after these treatments.
