O serotyping scheme for Enterobacter cloacae

A serotyping scheme for Enterobacter cloacae based on heat-stable somatic antigens is described. A total of 28 antisera were prepared in rabbits, and titers of agglutinins were high (greater than 640). Some cross-reactions were observed, and 11 sera required absorption before routine use.

Rupture of the Spleen Associated with Enterobacter Cloacae

A 58-year-old male, with abdominal pain but no signs of sepsis, was admitted as a medical emergency. During hospitalization, spontaneous splenic rupture was diagnosed and splenectomy successfully performed. A smear revealed presence of Enterobacter cloacae on the splenic surface; histopathology demonstrated granulocytous infiltration of the spleen.

Enterobacter cloacae causing pneumatocele in a neonate

Pneumatocele formation, a cyst‐like rarefaction that develops within the lung parenchyma, is an unusual complication of pneumonia in the neonate. It has been reported to occur with Staphlococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

Enterobacter cloacae rpoS promoter and gene organization

The upstream region of the Enterobacter cloacae strain CECT960 rpoS gene was sequenced. An IS 10R element was found within the nlpD gene, between rpoSp and rpoS. The rpoS promoter, although functional, did not drive transcription of the gene in this strain.

Acute Necrotizing Pneumonia Caused by Enterobacter cloacae

We have described a 55-year-old man with fever, productive cough, and a right upper lobe infiltrate, which subsequently cavitated. Cultures of bronchial secretions obtained by bronchoscopic protected brush catheter technique revealed Enterobacter cloacae, a previously unreported cause of acute necrotizing pneumonia.

Sequence of a melibiose transporter gene of Enterobacter cloacae

We cloned a fragment of the chromosomal DNA of Enterobacter cloacae, which enabled a melibiose-negative Escherichia coli mutant lacking melB to grow on melibiose as the sole source of carbon. Transformed cells harboring the hybrid plasmid carrying the cloned DNA showed melibiose transport activity.
