Entomopathogens: Theory and practice [PDF]

open access: yes
Entomopathogens are the pathogens of insects, in other words those microorganisms or microscopic infectious agents like viruses, capable of causing them a disease possibly leading to their death. Beyond this simple and obvious definition, entomopathogens

Potential of Entomopathogenic Nematodes to Control the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle Psylliodes chrysocephala

open access: yesInsects, 2023
Cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB) is an important pest of oilseed rape that was controlled by neonicotinoid seed treatments until they were banned for this use in 2013.

Fungal infection affects sexual signalling and mate choice in the sugarcane borer

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Fungus‐infected Diatraea saccharalis females exhibit enhanced attractiveness to males in wind tunnel assays. Fungal infection alters the pheromone profile of females, increasing the relative abundance of Z9‐16: Ald, a minor but behaviourally active component of the species' sex pheromone blend.

Entomopathogens for control of Hypsipyla spp [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Published information on the incidence of pathogens in the field and laboratory infections of Hypsipyla spp. with entomopathogens is reviewed. In addition, some preliminary results of field collections from Ghana and Costa Rica are presented.

Microbiome‐mediated immunity: Limited support from the gazelle dung beetle

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Digitonthophagus gazella rely on a maternally inherited microbiome passed across generations via a maternal faecal pellet called the pedestal. We experimentally manipulated the presence of the pedestal, providing it to some individuals while withholding it from others to determine how pedestal microbiota may affect beetle immune potential.

Subterranean Termite Social Alarm and Hygienic Responses to Fungal Pathogens

open access: yesInsects, 2019
In social insects, alerting nestmates to the presence of a pathogen should be critical for limiting its spread and initiating social mechanisms of defense.

From biology to biotechnology: Host‐regulation factors from parasitoid wasps are a source of bioactive molecules with translational potential

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Parasitoid wasps deploy maternal and embryonic factors to reprogramme host physiology. Venom, calyx fluid, polydnaviruses, teratocytes and larval secretions act in a coordinated, compartmentalised manner. Host‐regulation factors are promising sources of insecticidal, antimicrobial and bioinspired translational molecules.

Habrobracon hebetor and Pteromalus cerealellae as Tools in Post-Harvest Integrated Pest Management

open access: yesInsects, 2019
Consumers are increasingly demanding pesticide-free grain/legumes and processed foods. Additionally, there are more restrictions, or complete loss, of insecticides labelled for use in managing stored grain insects in post-harvest ecosystems.

Combined application of Isaria fumosorosea and beta-cyfluthrin in the control of coffee leaf miner

open access: yesRevista Ceres, 2022
The coffee leaf miner is responsible for significant decreases in coffee production. To mitigate the problems caused by this pest control strategies need to be applied.

Bacteriomes, cryptic forms and evolution of a common wireworm pest species, Hypnoidus bicolor

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Wireworms are important agricultural pests, including Hypnoidus bicolor in the Canadian Prairies. Parthenogenetic and sexual populations of H. bicolor appear associated with different molecular clades. Bacterial community composition and structure were influenced by developmental stage, sampling location and host genetics.
