Thresholds in aridity and soil carbon-to-nitrogen ratio govern the accumulation of soil microbial residues

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment, 2021
Aridity, soil nutrient stoichiometry and bulk carbon content are reliable predictors of microbial residue accumulation in soil carbon pools, according to a meta-analysis of amino sugar concentrations in grasslands, woodlands and forests.

Chronobiology of Cancer: How Aging Fuels Oncogenesis at the Molecular Level

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates the key biological pathways linking aging with cancer development and progression. In the upper left, cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, toxins, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) causes DNA damage and genomic instability, whereas age‐related decline in repair mechanisms, such as ATM/ATR, BER, and NER ...

Environmental pollution - parasitic pollution

open access: yesSustainable use and protection of animal world in the context of climate change, 2021
The paper presents the danger caused by environmental pollution (water, soil, vegetables, fruits, animal and plant products) with parasitic elements eliminated and spread by humans and animals, as well as the importance of conducting research in this field. An important role is also played by the high level of infestation, with various parasitic agents,

Effects of Causal Beliefs About Gout on Public Views About Gout Management: A Randomized Experimental Study

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Despite well‐described biologic causes, the public views unhealthy lifestyle choices as the primary cause of gout. This study investigated how causal beliefs about gout influence the public's views about its management. Methods In a randomized study, 201 members of the public viewed one of two 2‐minute videos about gout.

Decabromodiphenyl ethane induces locomotion neurotoxicity and potential Alzheimer’s disease risks through intensifying amyloid-beta deposition by inhibiting transthyretin/transthyretin-like proteins

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2022
As a major alternative to traditional brominated flame retardants (BFRs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is widely used and has been commonly detected in various environmental media and organisms.

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status and Short‐Term Functional Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can accumulate functional status (FS) impairment. We evaluated the association between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, as measured by the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), and FS in a national SLE sample.

Designing Polymer Nanocomposites for X‐Ray Shielding: Mechanisms, Architectures, and Scalable Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights advances in lightweight, lead‐free polymer nanocomposites for diagnostic X‐ray shielding. By linking filler chemistry, dispersion, architecture, and photon interaction mechanisms, it establishes structure–performance relationships guiding material design.

Industrial pollution and social deprivation: evidence and complexity in evaluating and responding to environmental inequality. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The local impacts of industrial pollution can take many forms andâ whilst uncertain in their scale, severity and distributionâ are widely recognised. The question of who in society potentially experiences these impacts through living near to emission ...

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.
