In situ observation of ZnO nanowire growth on zinc film in environmental scanning electron microscope

open access: yes, 2010
In situ uniform growth of ZnO nanowires was realized and monitored at real time by heating zinc film in an environmental scanning electron microscope. Better controllability and repeatability were obtained by using zinc film as source material compared ...

Mechanical Behavior and Fracture Mechanisms of MXene/PVDF Nanocomponsites: In Situ Characterization and Multiscale Analysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Multiscale experiments and modeling reveal how Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets reinforce PVDF nanocomposites. An optimal MXene loading (∼1 wt.%) nearly doubles tensile strength through efficient stress transfer, flake alignment, and crack‐deflection mechanisms, transforming ductile polymer behavior into a controlled multi‐stage fracture pathway which aligns ...

The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) - theory and applications

open access: yes, 1993
The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) allows direct observation of specimens in their natural state, without the need for elaborate sample preparation techniques. Recent technical developments allow the detection of various signals generated by the specimen, such as secondary and backscattered electrons, cathodoluminescence, and x-rays.

Regulated Ion‐Diffusion Hydrogels for Subtle and Multimodal Temperature‐Strain Sensing in Wound Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A soft, dual‐channel hydrogel patch enables simultaneous detection of wound temperature and strain by integrating ion‐diffusion‐mediated thermoelectric and resistive sensing. The conformal design maintains stable performance during motion, capturing subtle inflammatory and mechanical changes for continuous wound monitoring.

Construction of differential pumping chamber with detector board for adaptation of scanning electron microscope working in high pressure

open access: yes, 2003
This paper deals with adaptation of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to the environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). ESEM allows work at higher pressure in some parts of the microscope.

Swelling‐Programmed Topographical Guidance for Dynamic Spheroid Self‐Assembly via a Mechanochemical Hydrogel Niche

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A swelling‐programmed micropatterned hydrogel guides adherent cells through a controlled transition from cell–matrix anchoring to cadherin‐mediated cell–cell compaction, enabling rapid assembly of high‐viability spheroids with defined size and morphology.

Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope: Some Critical Issues

open access: yes, 1993
In the environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM), the gas flow around the main pressure limiting aperture establishes a density gradient through which the electron beam passes.

Observation of wetting behavior of polypropylene microfibers by environmental scanning electron microscope

open access: yes, 2002
The wetting behavior of polypropylene meltblown microfibers by water and oil was investigated using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). Water droplets were formed on the fiber surfaces by controlling temperature and pressure in the ESEM
