Relationship between science and technology in the New Zealand curriculum [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
New Zealand underwent major curriculum reforms in the early1990s. These reforms were determined by the New Zealand Curriculum Framework (Ministry of Education 1993), which provides an overarching framework for the development of curricula in New Zealand ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

AIMES: an enhanced monitoring system for environmental suitability of Aedes-borne diseases

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Aedes -borne diseases, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, pose a significant threat to millions of people worldwide each year. Considering the relationships between the emergence of these diseases and anthropogenic climate change, it has become ...

Shifting landscapes: from coalface to quick sand? Teaching geography, earth and environmental sciences in UK higher education [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper we examine contemporary academic working lives, with particular reference to teaching-only and teaching-focused academics. We argue that intensification in the neoliberal university has significantly shifted the structure of academic ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Protocol for constructing an accessible exposure chamber for in vitro and in vivo modeling of airway environmental exposures

open access: yesSTAR Protocols
Summary: Exposure systems to study the effects of environmental exposures can be costly to purchase and difficult to use. Here, we present an accessible and cost-effective approach to building an exposure chamber in the lab.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

How the Marsden Fund has failed to achieve its full potential in the ESA panel: evidence of limitations in scope, biased outcomes, and futile applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We have analysed the scope of proposals funded by the ‘Earth Sciences and Astronomy’ (ESA) panel of the Marsden Fund for the period 2004 to 2013.
