Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

The role of carbon labels for consumer decisions: evidence from a class of Chinese students

open access: yesFrontiers in Climate
Although achieving China's “3060” dual-carbon goals is an urgent priority, current research in the field of carbon labeling has paid limited attention to its pathways on consumers' green purchase decision.

On environmental concern, willingness to pay, and postmaterialist values: Evidence from Istanbul [PDF]

open access: yes
We explore the impact of geographical proximity of environmental problems on environmental concern and willingness to pay (WTP) for environmental improvement, with emphasis on the relevance of Inglehart’s postmaterialism thesis on this inquiry.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Do stakeholders’ values support transformative change in the food system? Evidence from the Netherlands

open access: yesSustainability: Science, Practice, & Policy
Research in the sustainability sciences often emphasizes values and value change as important drivers of sustainability transformations. Drawing from conceptualizations of values developed in environmental psychology and the environmental social sciences,

ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGES AND OPTION VALUES

open access: yesNatural Resource Modeling, 1986
The purpose of this paper is to clarify a concept — option value — that has arisen in environmental literature, to illustrate how it might be measured, and to indicate its potential importance. Option value arises when failure to control environmental disruption leads to irreversible losses of uncertain magnitude.

Law, environmental policy and Kantian philosophy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Are Kantian philosophy and its principle of respect for persons inadequate to the protection of environmental values? This paper answers this question by elucidating how Kantian ethics can take environmental values seriously.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
