Enzootic Angiostrongyliasis in Shenzhen, China

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2008
To the Editor: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis in humans after they ingest infective larvae in freshwater and terrestrial snails and slugs, paratenic hosts (such as freshwater fish, shrimps, frogs, and crabs), or contaminated vegetables.

Amphibian Strategies Against Attacks by Flies: Host‐Specificity and Threats

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Species interactions between Diptera flies and amphibians play a significant role in tropical ecosystems, but their ecology and evolution remain understudied. This review explores the costs flies impose on amphibians, such as pathogen transmission and disruption of communication systems, and highlights the evolutionary strategies employed by both ...

Microbiome overview in swine lungs. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the etiologic agent of swine enzootic pneumonia. However other mycoplasma species and secondary bacteria are found as inhabitants of the swine respiratory tract, which can be also related to disease.

ZIKV Phylogenetic Characterization Reveals Evolutionary Diversity, Regional Dissemination, and Emergence of African Lineages in Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Basic Microbiology, Volume 66, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT During the last epidemic in 2015–2016, Zika virus (ZIKV) gaining worldwide attention due to its association with neurological complications such as microcephaly and Guillain‐Barré syndrome. ZIKV can be transmitted through vector‐borne, sexual, maternal‐fetal, and blood transfusion transmission.

Longitudinal monitoring of Culicoides in Belgium between 2007 and 2011: local variation in population dynamics parameters warrant cautious use of monitoring data

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2018
Background Several European countries suffered important economic losses during the past decade due to the emergence of bluetongue and Schmallenberg viruses. Both are viruses of veterinary importance and are spread by Culicoides spp.

Successional and native forests predict the occurrence and infection status of Chagas disease vectors in Panama

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Findings here show that successional forest predicts greater kissing bug infestation risk in palm trees, whereas native forest predicts lower kissing bug occurrence but greater infection with T. cruzi. These insights can guide land use planning towards vegetation management practices that help minimize T. cruzi transmission risks for rural communities.

New Patterns for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and Adjustment of Prevention, Control and Surveillance Strategies: The Example of France

open access: yesViruses
From 2020 up to summer 2023, there was a substantial change in the situation concerning the high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in Europe. This change concerned mainly virus circulation within wildlife, both in wild birds and wild mammals.

Blood donor West Nile virus screening identifies three autochthonous Usutu virus infections in Spain

open access: yesTransfusion, Volume 66, Issue 1, Page 56-62, January 2026.
Abstract Background Considering the increase of West Nile virus (WNV) circulation in Europe, blood banks perform WNV Nucleic Acid Test testing to ensure transfusion safety during the WNV transmission season. Usutu virus (USUV), an arbovirus related to WNV, has relevant molecular and serological cross‐reactivity with WNV. Study Design and Methods During

Modeling Phenological and Physiological Responses to Climate Warming in a Hypothetical Migratory Songbird–Mosquito System

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
While changes in both phenology and physiology under climate warming are known to influence infection dynamics, surprisingly few studies have explored their interactive effects. We extended the Ross‐MacDonald model for a vector‐borne disease to explore how projections of moderate and severe warming influence the emergence of a hypothetical vector‐borne
