Biological effects of CCS in the absence of SOD1 enzyme activation: implications for disease in a mouse model for ALS.

open access: yesHuman Molecular Genetics, 2008
The CCS copper chaperone is critical for maturation of Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) through insertion of the copper co-factor and oxidization of an intra-subunit disulfide.

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Characterization of α- Amylase Produced from a Local Isolate of Bacillus licheniformis R5 [PDF]

open access: yesAl-Qadisiyah Journal For Agriculture Sciences, 2016
This research is conducted at the College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad in 2004. The characterization of the purified enzyme shows that the molecular weight of the enzyme produced from the bacteria is 56.000 Daltons as it was determined by gel ...

Enzyme Activity in the Crowded Milieu

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The cytosol of a cell is a concentrated milieu of a variety of different molecules, including small molecules (salts and metabolites) and macromolecules such as nucleic acids, polysaccharides, proteins and large macromolecular complexes. Macromolecular crowding in the cytosolic environment is proposed to influence various properties of proteins ...

7-Keto-Cholesterol and Cholestan-3beta, 5alpha, 6beta-Triol Induce Eryptosis through Distinct Pathways Leading to NADPH Oxidase and Nitric Oxide Synthase Activation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BACKGROUND/AIMS: We showed that patho-physiological concentrations of either 7-keto-cholesterol (7-KC), or cholestane-3beta, 5alpha, 6beta-triol (TRIOL) caused the eryptotic death of human red blood cells (RBC), strictly dependent on the early production

Spot‐14 and its paralog Spot‐14R regulate expression of metabolic and thermogenic pathway genes in murine brown and beige adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spot‐14 and Spot‐14R play distinct roles in regulating metabolism in brown and beige adipocytes. While both influence lipid and glucose pathways, Spot‐14 uniquely controls thermogenic gene expression. This dual regulation balances energy storage and heat production, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders. Spot 14

Identification of functionally related enzymes by learning-to-rank methods [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
Enzyme sequences and structures are routinely used in the biological sciences as queries to search for functionally related enzymes in online databases. To this end, one usually departs from some notion of similarity, comparing two enzymes by looking for correspondences in their sequences, structures or surfaces. For a given query, the search operation

Seprase: An overview of an important matrix serine protease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Seprase or Fibroblast Activation Protein (FAP) is an integral membrane serine peptidase, which has been shown to have gelatinase activity. Seprase has a dual function in tumour progression.

The Ordered and Compartment-specific Autoproteolytic Removal of the Furin Intramolecular Chaperone Is Required for Enzyme Activation*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2002
The propeptide of furin has multiple roles in guiding the activation of the endoprotease in vivo. The 83-residue N-terminal propeptide is autoproteolytically excised in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) at the consensus furin site, -Arg104-Thr-Lys-Arg107↓-,
