Microbial synthesis of sedoheptulose from glucose by metabolically engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories
Background Seven-carbon sugars, which rarely exist in nature, are the key constitutional unit of septacidin and hygromycin B in bacteria. These sugars exhibit a potential therapeutic effect for hypoglycaemia and cancer and serve as building blocks for ...

A switch element in the autophagy E2 Atg3 mediates allosteric regulation across the lipidation cascade

open access: yes, 2019
Autophagy depends on the E2 enzyme, Atg3, functioning in a conserved E1-E2-E3 trienzyme cascade that catalyzes lipidation of Atg8-family ubiquitin-like proteins (UBLs).

Digestive enzymes in Rhinolophus euryale (Rhinolophidae, Chiroptera) are active also during hibernation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
During the winter, bats use hibernation as a means of surviving the period of low prey offer. However, the Mediterranean horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus euryale) arouses from torpor quite frequently.

The nicotinamide hypothesis revisited—plant defense signaling integrating PARP, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, epigenetics, and glutathione

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nicotinamide (NIC) and nicotinic acid (NIA) are proposed as stress signaling compounds in plants. Oxidative stress may lead to single strand breaks (SSB) in DNA, which activate poly(ADP‐ribose) polymerase (PARP). NIC and NIA are then formed from NAD. NIC and NIA can promote epigenetic changes leading to the expression of defense genes specific for the ...

Enzyme‐enzyme interactions and their metabolic role

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1990
There are continuing reports on the existence of complexes of sequential metabolic enzymes. New techniques for their detection have been described and include affinity electrophoresis and the use of anti‐idiotypic antibodies. Channeling of substrates has been reported for several systems as well as direct substrate transfer through dynamic enzyme ...

ACSS2 involved in acetyl‐CoA synthesis regulates skeletal muscle function

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme acyl‐coenzyme A synthetase short‐chain family member‐2 (ACSS2) catalyzes the conversion of acetate to acetyl‐CoA, but its function in skeletal muscle is unclear. We studied ACSS2 deficiency in mouse and fly models. Skeletal muscle from the mouse model showed atrophic fibers, excess lipid, and depleted NADH.

How an Enzyme Can Be a Non-Enzyme [PDF]

open access: yesStructure, 2004
AbstractThe crystal structure of the endonuclease, ribonuclease III, in complex with a double-stranded RNA fragment reveals the mechanism that allows for switching between two functional forms of the enzyme.

A working model for cytoplasmic assembly of H/ACA snoRNPs

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Dyskerin is the component of nuclear H/ACA ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) endowed with pseudouridine synthase catalytic activity. Two isoforms of human dyskerin have been characterized: the abundant Iso1, mainly nuclear, and the shorter Iso3, mainly cytoplasmic but occasionally imported into nuclei.

Quality Evaluation and Functional Properties of Reduced Sugar Jellies Formulated from Citrus Fruits

open access: yesJournal of Chemistry, 2020
In Tunisia, despite the large annual production and the numerous citrus varieties under cultivation, citrus processing industries lack product diversity.
