How Do Climatic Factors Directly Influence the Incidence and Risk of Meningococcal Meningitis Across the African Meningitis Belt? A Narrative Literature Review

open access: yesGeoHealth, Volume 10, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Globally, the highest incidence of meningococcal meningitis occurs within the African meningitis belt, spanning 26 countries across sub‐Saharan Africa. Meningococcal meningitis incidence is highly seasonal in this region specifically, with outbreaks mostly occurring during the dry season, characterized by low rainfall and atmospheric humidity,

Evidence of Ice‐Rich Layered Deposits in the Medusae Fossae Formation of Mars

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Subsurface reflectors in radar sounder data from the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding instrument aboard the Mars Express spacecraft indicate significant dielectric contrasts between layers in the Martian Medusae Fossae ...

Intra‐Tessera Plains: Implications of Their Radar Properties for Surface Processes on Venus

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Intra‐tessera plains are radar‐dark plains deposits that occur within tesserae. Their emplacement mechanism(s) and composition are poorly constrained, though they are hypothesized to be basaltic lava flows. Here, we map intra‐tessera plains within 16 different tesserae spanning various latitudes and elevations.

Unraveling the Enrichment Mechanisms of Rare Earth Elements in Deep‐Sea Sediments: An Environmental Magnetic Perspective

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Deep‐sea rare earth elements and yttrium (REY)‐rich sediments have attracted considerable attention since their discovery in 2011. However, the environmental factors controlling REY enrichment remain poorly understood, largely because paleoceanographic ...

Depositional History of the Namibian Mud Belt Reveals Late Holocene Weakening of the Benguela Coastal Current

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract We investigate late Holocene changes in the northern Benguela Upwelling System using a multi‐proxy approach on shallow shelf deposits from the Namibian mud belt. Three sediment cores characterized by organic carbon‐rich, anoxic, and partly gas‐bearing sediments were retrieved along a sampling transect at 23°S in August 2019.

Surface‐State Controls on Dust Emission Variability in Lower Mesopotamia and Kuwait Using Field and Multi‐High‐Resolution Satellite Data

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Aeolian dust strongly influences climate, air quality, and biogeochemical cycles, yet identifying source areas and determining their surface‐state controls remain challenging. We focus on lower Mesopotamia and Kuwait, a globally significant dust source region where surface characteristics of dust sources remain poorly understood through ...

Revealing climate dynamics through topsoil magnetic properties on the Chinese Loess Plateau

open access: yesQuaternary Science Advances
The Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), with its extensive deposits of eolian dust and interbedded paleosols, provides a unique archive for reconstructing climate variability, particularly precipitation and monsoonal dynamics.

A major reorganization of Asian climate by the early Miocene [PDF]

open access: yesClimate of the Past, 2008
The global climate system experienced a series of drastic changes during the Cenozoic. In Asia, these include the climate transformation from a zonal pattern to a monsoon-dominated pattern, the disappearance of typical subtropical ...
