Testing optimal defense theory: Root resistance selection in chicory (Cichorium intybus) reduces foliar defense and alters aphid performance and feeding behavior

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Root‐focused resistance in chicory reduces defenses in leaves, impairing root aphids but enhancing foliar aphid performance. Selecting root resistance can create unintended trade‐offs across plant organs. Abstract BACKGROUND Plants are constantly exposed to a wide range of herbivores at both aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) levels, involving ...

Russian wheat aphid: a model for genomic plasticity and a challenge to breeders

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Invasive foundress finds suitable habitat and reproduces through pathogenesis. Wingless females produce life offspring quickly, which leads to high population densities. High population densities result in competition, which may induce epigenetic changes and wing development for dispersal.

Hemipteran vectors of stylet‐borne plant viruses: Aphids lead the charge

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Among all sap‐feeding hemipterans, aphids stand out by far as the most important vectors of noncirculative plant viruses. Compared to whiteflies and mealybugs, aphids’ highly specialized stylet anatomy and distinct feeding behaviors contribute, together with other features of their biology, to their remarkable efficiency in transmitting stylet‐borne ...

LsFAMeT and LsJHAMT coordinate JH biosynthesis to regulate fecundity in Laodelphax striatellus

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus, can trigger large‐scale outbreaks when encountering suitable habitats during migration due to their strong reproductive ability. This study investigated the role of juvenile hormone (JH) in regulating SBPH reproduction.

On Independent Set on B1-EPG Graphs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this paper we consider the Maximum Independent Set problem (MIS) on $B_1$-EPG graphs. EPG (for Edge intersection graphs of Paths on a Grid) was introduced in ~\cite{edgeintersinglebend} as the class of graphs whose vertices can be represented as simple paths on a rectangular grid so that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding ...

Frequency and Severity of Allergic Reactions to Non‐Mandatory Labelled Allergenic Foods—Data From Two Large European Cohorts

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
In two large European cohorts, 589 reactions to non‐mandatory labelled plant‐based foods were identified with sunflower seed, pine nut, pea and lentil as the most frequent triggers. Reaction severity was not different between mandatory and non‐mandatory labelled allergenic foods. Their frequency and rising trends (e.g., fenugreek, pumpkin seed) support

Anthelmintic resistance in sheep nematodes in Australia: a compilation of recent test results

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Objective The results of recent faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRTs) were collated to provide an indication of the prevalence and severity of anthelmintic resistance in sheep nematodes across Australia and of changes in comparison to earlier testing reports.

Sustainable control of cyathostomin infections in practice

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Cyathostomins are the most prevalent helminths in horses and are found in nearly all grazing groups. These parasites have been shown to exhibit widespread anthelmintic resistance and can cause clinical disease, so they are a growing concern.
