Environmental epidemiology and risk assessment
Toxicology Letters, 2008Epidemiology is the science of public health. Environmental epidemiology specially focuses on human health risks related to exposures in the general (non-occupational) environment. Epidemiology studies may contribute to human risk assessment by identifying hazards, by assessing human exposures to toxicants, and by establishing exposure response ...

Pseudohypoparathyroidism – epidemiology, mortality and risk of complications
Clinical Endocrinology, 2015SummaryObjectivePseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is caused by a mutation within the GNAS gene or upstream of the GNAS complex locus. It is characterized by target organ resistance to PTH, resulting in hypocalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia. Studies in patients with PHP are limited.

BPH epidemiology and risk factors
The Prostate, 1989Benign enlargement of the prostate gland is extremely common with increasing age. The incidence of gross enlargement of the gland has been reported as 40% in 70 year-old males. Microscopic foci can be found in 80%. The disease seems to be most common in blacks, Caucasians, and Jews, but less frequent in males from the Far East.

Epidemiology and Risk Factors of Venous Thromboembolism
Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, 2006Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common disorder that can affect apparently healthy as well as hospitalized patients. The actual incidence and prevalence of this disease are difficult to estimate because of its often silent nature. The clinical relevance of VTE is highlighted by the important rates of recurrence and mortality.

Leukaemia epidemiology and radiation risks
Blood Reviews, 1992This review deals with the associations between exposure to ionising and non-ionising irradiation and the risks of leukaemia. A systematic approach is adopted to enable the reader to disentangle the different types of exposure and their resultant effects (if any) on leukaemogenesis.

Epidemiologic risks for food allergy
Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2008This article reviews possible risk factors and theories for the development of food allergy. It is noted that previous strategies to prevent food allergy through allergen avoidance during pregnancy, breast-feeding, and infancy have more recently been called into question.

Epidemiology and Risk Factors in Childhood
1977By now everyone is familiar with the risk factors of premature coronary heart disease: elevated serum cholesterol, hypertension, and cigarette smoking (1) — the big three, followed closely by obesity and diabetes. Age, sex, and inheritance are equally potent risk factors, but since they are beyond the individual’s control in the preventive sense, they ...

Epidemiology, risks and pathogenesis of obesity
Meat Science, 2005Obesity is operationally defined using a relationship of height and weight called the body mass index. Using this measure, more than 60% of Americans are overweight and over 30% are obese. To determine the importance of the body mass index, which would also label many athletes "overweight", we also need assessment of central fatness, and the medical ...

Breast Cancer Epidemiology and Risk Factors
2000Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in the Western society. Over the past decades it has become apparent that breast cancer incidence rates are increasing steadily, whereas the mortality rates for breast cancer have remained relatively constant. Information through the media on this rising number of cases has increased breast health
