Exopolymeric substances (EPS) produced in the photic zone and surface sediments sequester calcium. Below the sediment surface, heterotrophic bacteria degrade EPS, releasing calcium resulting in carbonate precipitation. This process, which continues for millennia deep in the core, is an important sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Bringing Biology Back In: The Unresolved Issue of “Epigenesis” in Kant
Epigenesis has become a far more exciting issue in Kant studies recently, especially with the publication of Jennifer Mensch’s Kant’ Organicism. In my commentary, I propose to clarify my own position on epigenesis relative to that of Mensch by once again

It has become somewhat of a platitude to call Aristotle the first epigenesist insofar as he thought form and structure emerged gradually from an unorganized, amorphous embryo. But modern biology now recognizes two senses of “epigenesis”.

Mitochondria and metazoan epigenesis [PDF]
In eukaryotes, mitochondrial activity controls ATP production, calcium dynamics, and redox state, thereby establishing physiological parameters governing the transduction of biochemical signals that regulate nuclear gene expression. However, these activities are commonly assumed to fulfill a 'housekeeping' function: necessary for life, but an ...

This study assessed skin biomechanics using the Cutometer in 441 community‐dwelling adults aged 20–93 from the INSPIRE‐T cohort. We demonstrated that skin elasticity and viscoelasticity parameters were associated with the intrinsic capacity (IC) score, a functional marker of healthy aging encompassing cognition, locomotion, psychology, vitality, and ...
