Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes to the genome and gene expression patterns that are not caused by direct changes to the DNA sequence. Examples of these changes include posttranslational modifications to DNA-bound histone proteins, DNA methylation, and remodeling of nuclear architecture.

'Epigenetics', the term that is used for the study of heritable changes in gene function that occur without a change in the DNA sequence, has become a significant area of research. As a consequence of this emerging field, our concepts founded upon genetics alone have been blurred and the way researchers think about heredity has changed.

Traditional treatments for cancer include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Recently, epigenetic inhibitors have been found to be very effective in cancer treatment. Epigenetic changes such as DNA methylation, histone deacetylation, and microRNA (miRNA) expression are capable of silencing the expression of tumor suppressor genes and ...

Why do we grow up to have the traits we do? Most 20th century scientists answered this question by referring only to our genes and our environments. But recent discoveries in the emerging field of behavioral epigenetics have revealed factors at the interface between genes and environments that also play crucial roles in development.

AbstractRecent research has revealed clock‐like patterns of epigenetic change across the life span in humans. Models describing these epigenetic changes have been dubbed “epigenetic clocks,” and they can not only predict chronological age but also reveal biological age, which measures physiological homeostasis and deterioration over the life span ...

Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood, and a growing body of evidence indicates that epigenetic variations may mediate the effects of environmental exposures on the development and natural history of asthma. Epigenetics is the study of mitotically or meiotically heritable changes in gene expression that occur without directly altering ...

Some of the key epigenetic regulatory mechanisms appeared early during evolution, and the acquisition of novel epigenetic regulators apparently facilitated certain evolutionary transitions. In this short review we focus mainly on the major epigenetic mechanisms that control chromatin structure and accessibility in mammalian cells.
