Epileptic spasms in tuberous sclerosis complex

Epilepsy Research, 2013
To characterize epileptic spasms (ES) occurring after the age of two years in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), particularly treatment response to vigabatrin (VGB), which is extremely effective for infantile spasms (IS) in TSC.The authors retrospectively reviewed 19 patients with TSC and ES.

Analysis of surgical strategies for children with epileptic spasms

Epileptic Disorders, 2021
AbstractObjective: To investigate surgical prognostic factors in order to establish a surgical plan for children with drug‐resistant epileptic spasms. Methods: We retrospectively analysed 64 children with drug‐resistant spasms who were operated on in Beijing; the electroclinical features, surgical procedures, and surgical outcomes of these children were

Clinical spectrum of epileptic spasms in children

Brain and Development, 2015
To compare etiologic, semiologic, and electrographic features of epileptic spasms (ES) in children with West syndrome (WS) vs. in children with other epilepsy syndromes and nonsyndromic epilepsies. The 24h-video/EEG recordings of consecutive children with ES were reviewed for etiology, ictal semiology, and interictal and ictal EEG features.

Cingulate Lesions Presenting With Epileptic Spasms

Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, 2009
To describe the novel finding of epileptic spasms arising from a cingulate lesion. We describe two children presenting with epileptic spasms who had lesions of the cingulate gyrus on MRI.In both patients, the lesions involved the midcingulate cortex. Seizures were characterized by prominent motor manifestations and resembled spasms.

Extent of EEG monitoring for detecting epileptic spasms

Seizure, 2022
Epileptic spasms (ES) are the ictal manifestation of West syndrome. Due to poor interrater reliability in diagnosing hypsarrhythmia, identification of ES - ideally on video EEG monitoring - is important to start proper treatment. We retrospectively analyzed inpatient video EEG recordings of 42 patients with new onset ES and calculated the time needed to

Atonic elements combined or uncombined with epileptic spasms in infantile spasms

Clinical Neurophysiology, 2017
To study the atonic elements combined or uncombined with epileptic spasms in infantile spasms. The demographic data, clinical characteristics, electroencephalogram (EEG), and polyelectromyography (PEMG) features were analyzed in 12 infantile spasm patients with atonic elements.A total of 29 EEGs were recorded.

Evolution of Surgical Management for Intractable Epileptic Spasms

Seminars in Pediatric Neurology, 2020
The understanding and management of epileptic spasms has considerably evolved since the mid 19th century. The realization that epileptic spasms can be generated from a focal brain lesion played a pivotal role in the development of neurosurgical management for intractable forms of this epilepsy.

Adjunctive perampanel therapy for patients with epileptic spasms

Pediatrics International, 2022
AbstractBackgroundPerampanel is an antiepileptic drug. Some studies have documented the efficacy of perampanel in epileptic spasms. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of adjunctive perampanel therapy (PT) in patients with epileptic spasms.MethodsWe retrospectively surveyed the efficacy and safety of adjunctive PT in 14 patients with epileptic

Epileptic spasms in clusters without hypsarrhythmia in infancy

Epileptic Disorders, 2003
Spasms are defined as epileptic seizures characterized by brief axial contraction, in flexion, extension or mixed, symmetric or asymmetric, lasting from a fraction of a second to 1‐2s, and are associated with a slow‐wave transient or sharp and slow‐wave complex, followed or not by voltage attenuation. Epileptic spasms usually appear in clusters and are

Epileptic Spasms in a Large Hypothalamic Hamartoma Cohort

Journal of Child Neurology, 2020
Introduction: Hypothalamic hamartoma is rarely associated with epileptic spasms. We describe epileptic spasms in a large cohort of hypothalamic hamartoma patients. Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review between March 2011 and March 2020 to identify patients with hypothalamic hamartoma and epilepsy.
