A CARD–FISH protocol for the identification and enumeration of epiphytic bacteria on marine algae

Journal of Microbiological Methods, 2006
A CARD-FISH protocol was developed and applied to analyse surface-associated bacteria on the marine algae Ulva lactuca, Delisea pulchra, Corallina officinalis, Amphiroa anceps, Porphyra sp. and Sargassum linearifolium. The combination of Alexa(546)-labelled tyramide as the reporter molecule with SYBR Green II counterstain allowed for superior detection

Production rates of epiphytic algae in a eutrophic lake

Hydrobiologia, 1996
During three complete annual cycles, chlorophyll a concentrations and primary production rates of algae epiphytic on Phragmites australis in eutrophic Lake Belau were determined. Primary production rates reached a peak during spring due to the growth of diatoms and filamentous green algae.

Chlorophyll d in an Epiphytic Cyanobacterium of Red Algae

Science, 2004
Chlorophyll (Chl) a is found in all oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. Manning and Strain in 1943 ([ 1 ][1]) and others ([ 2 ][2]–[ 4 ][3]) reported Chl d (3-desvinyl-3-formyl Chl a) as the second Chl pigment in several species of marine macrophytic red algae, and it is now considered a ...

Epiphytic algae on eelgrass at Roscoff, France

Aquatic Botany, 1983
Abstract Algae growing as epiphytes on eelgrass, Zostera marina L., at Roscoff were investigated during one year by examining the species richness and abundance. The abundance of the algae, expressed as cover values, appeared to be influenced by the characteristics of the substrate, especially the ephemeral status and growth rate of the leaves ...

Primary production of epiphytic algae in a marsh pond

Canadian Journal of Botany, 1976
The use of artificial substrates for the estimation of epiphytic algal production was evaluated. The primary productivity of epiphytic algae in a marsh pond (Crescent Pond, Delta Marsh, Manitoba) was estimated using a cellulose acetate substrate. Annual production, based on 14C uptake was 26.8 g C m−2 of pond surface area.

Epiphytic Algae on the Bryophytes of Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica

National Academy Science Letters, 2020
The epiphytic algae on the bryophytes of Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica, are taxonomically investigated, and sixteen algal species are recognized including ten species of blue–green algae dominated by the species of Nostoc, three species of green algae, a xanthophycean alga and two diatoms. The occurrence of algae on different bryophytes is dependent

Eelgrass structural complexity mediates mesograzer herbivory on epiphytic algae

Oecologia, 2018
Structural complexity mediates ecological processes such as predation, competition, and recruitment in marine systems, but relatively little is known about its effects on herbivory. In temperate seagrasses, such as eelgrass (Zostera marina), the primary herbivores are small crustacean and gastropod mesograzers that promote seagrass persistence by ...

Interactions between macrofaunal epiphytes and their host algae

1992
Abstract Marine algae provide a suitable habitat for a wide range of mobile and sessile macrofauna. Many of these organisms are permanent members of the epiphyton, whereas others utilize the host in a more transient fashion. Different types of algae support different suites of epiphytes according to the resources which the former provide.

Epiphytic algae and invertebrates on aquatic mosses in a Québec stream

Fundamental and Applied Limnology, 1999
We sampled algae and invertebrates growing on aquatic mosses in a Quebec trout stream to a) assess their temporal and spatial variations in biomass, taxonomy, and size, and b) to compare the communities on mosses to those on nearby rocks. The biomass of epiphytic algae and invertebrates was remarkably stable during the summer despite a strong mid ...

Response of Epiphytic Algae to Heavy Pollution of Water Bodies.

Water environment research : a research publication of the Water Environment Federation, 2018
The objective of the present work was to study the structure of epiphyton in water bodies significantly differing in the degree of their contamination. In the studied water bodies, the concentration of ammonia () accounted for 0.04-74.00 mg/L; nitrite (), 0.002-1.750 mg/L; nitrate (), 0.13-58.00 mg/L; inorganic compounds of phosphorus (Pinorg), 0.041-
