Biotic interactions in the colonization of crustose coralline algae by epiphytes

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1996
Abstract Experiments were carried out on the southern coast of the Isle of Man, British Isles, in summer 1990. Canopy removal and grazer exclusion treatments were applied to experimental areas on the mid-shore where two crustose coralline algae were growing together: Phymatolithon lenormandii (Aresch.) Adey and P. purpureum (P. and H.

The use of epiphytic algae to indicate environmental changes

Australian Journal of Ecology, 1982
AbstractThe distribution of an epiphytic alga, shown in earlier studies to be an indicator species, has changed after modification of environmental conditions.

Detection of inconspicuous epiphytic algae supporting food webs in seagrass meadows

Oecologia, 1984
Detritus from common seagrasses and other marine angiosperms may often be a less important basis for estuarine food webs than previously believed. In NW Gulf of Mexico seagrass meadows, epiphytic algae have high productivities, palatability, and a more important trophic role than common large plants have.

Community interactions between the filamentous alga Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kuetzing, its epiphytes, and epiphyte grazers

Oecologia, 1991
Interactions between epiphytes, epiphyte grazers and the filamentous green alga Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kuetzing were explored with smaples from rivers in Montana. Extracts of C. glomerata lowered photosynthetic rates of Nitzschia fonticola Grunow (an epiphytic diatom). Nutrient enrichment showed that C.

Settlement and survival of epiphytes on two intertidal crustose coralline alga

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1997
Abstract The effects of the microtopography of the surface and the antifouling ability of crustose coralline alga on the recruitment of epiphytes were tested under different shading conditions. In experiments set up on the south coast of Isle of Man, British Isles, during autumn and winter, epiphyte settlement and survival on Phymatolithon ...

The effects of epiphytic algae and their grazers on the intertidal seagrass Zostera japonica

Aquatic Botany, 2000
Abstract The impact of the dominant grazers (Clithon spp.) of epiphytic algae on the biomass and percentage cover of a population of the intertidal seagrass Zostera japonica was investigated at Lai Chi Wo, northeast Hong Kong. The population density of Clithon spp. followed a seasonal pattern, varying between 2800 individuals m−2 in winter.

Studies of marine epiphytic algae, Calvi, Corsica. II. Seasonal variations in the populations of epiphytic blue-green algae in three harbours with different pollution loads

British Phycological Journal, 1988
Variations in the populations of blue-green algae epiphytic on Cladophora prolifera were studied quantitatively for a year in three harbours of contrasting water quality in the area of Calvi (Corsica). The development of blue-green algae was maximal in the summer and minimal in winter and spring, with some differences between the harbours.

Effects of atmospheric pollutants on epiphytic terrestrial algae

2012
Unlike their counterparts lichens and bryophytes, the role of epiphytic terrestrial algae as indicators of atmospheric pollution is not widely explored by biologists. This thesis investigates the relationship between the two factors using green algae due to their high degree of exposure to pollutants and their potential for rapid response to ...

Hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Aegean Sea, mostly epiphytic on algae

1999
The hydroid fauna of the Mediterranean Sea is one of the best known in the world, nevertheless in the Aegean Sea this fauna remains nearly unexplored. This paper reports on 31 species collected in the two Aegean islands of Kos, in the Dodecanese, and Milos, in the Cyclades. Twenty-two species were collected on algae, chiefly on Cystoseira. Different

Effects of drilling fluids on Thalassia testudinum and its epiphytic algae

Environmental and Experimental Botany, 1986
Abstract A flow-through microcosm system was developed to assess the potential influence of drilling fluids on Thalassia testudinum and its epiphytic algae. Two treatments (drilling fluid and a montmorillonite clay) and a control were used for seven tests: two 10-day, 200 μl/l exposures; two 10-day, 1000 μl/l; and three 6-week, 190 μl/l.
