Unclear host taxonomy hinders parasite studies: An up‐to‐date checklist of the protozoan and metazoan parasites of Phoxinus minnows (Teleostei: Leuciscidae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 105, Issue 6, Page 1501-1539, December 2024.
Abstract Phoxinus minnows are small freshwater fish found throughout Eurasia. The taxonomy of this genus is still under investigation, and new species are regularly described. They are frequently introduced outside their native range due to their use as live bait for angling, and such fish introductions can have diverse impacts on the recipient areas ...

First record of epibionts peritrichids and suctorians (Protozoa, Ciliophora) on Pomacea lineata (Spix, 1827)

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2006
This study made a survey on the ciliate protozoans from Peritrichid and Suctorian taxa, epibionts of Pomacea lineata (Spix, 1827) (Ampullariidae). Fifty mollusks were collected in places of irrigation ditches and shell was scraped with a scalpel and the ...

Ectocommensal and ectoparasites in goldfish Carassius auratus (Linnaeus, 1758) in farmed in the State of São Paulo

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária
Concomitant infections by several parasitic genera are rare, very debilitating and often lethal to fish reared under commercial breeding conditions. Were describe a multiple and concurrent parasite infestation in cultured goldfish Carassius auratus with ...

Symbiotic species diversity can explain invasion success and host–parasite system stability: The case of gammarid hosts

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2024.
Abstract A major current challenge related to invasions is the absence of a comprehensive theoretical basis for preventing the introduction of alien species and controlling their populations. By using a macroecological framework, we aim to examine patterns of symbiotic species diversity across native and invasive hosts to understand the mechanisms ...

Epistylid ciliates as epibionts on calanoid copepods in an Amazonian floodplain lake (Batata Lake) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Limnologica Brasiliensia
Aim The main objective was to investigate changes in the prevalence and infestation intensity of the epibiotic relationship (ciliates/calanoids) in relation to the impact of bauxite tailings (natural and impacted areas) during two distinct periods of the

The effect of external flow on 3D orientation of a microscopic sessile suspension feeder, Vorticella convallaria

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1537, Issue 1, Page 51-63, July 2024.
Vorticella are microscopic sessile suspension feeders that live attached to substrates in aquatic environments. They feed using a self‐generated feeding current. Their feeding rate depends on an individual's orientation relative to the substrate and ambient flow. We exposed individuals to varying flow speeds and recorded their 3D orientation.
