Equation of state sensitivities when inferring neutron star and dense matter properties [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2018
Understanding the dense matter equation of state at extreme conditions is an important open problem. Astrophysical observations of neutron stars promise to solve this, with Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer poised to make precision measurements ...

Equation of state for systems with Goldstone bosons

open access: yes, 2002
We discuss some recent determinations of the equation of state for the XY and the Heisenberg universality class.Comment: 5 pages, Proceedings of the Conference "Horizons in Complex Systems", Messina; in honor of the 60th birthday of H.E ...

Ergothioneine supplementation improves pup phenotype and survival in a murine model of spinal muscular atrophy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease affecting motor neurons. Individuals with SMA experience mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of an antioxidant and neuroprotective substance, ergothioneine (ERGO), on an SMNΔ7 mouse model of SMA.

Microbial exopolysaccharide production by polyextremophiles in the adaptation to multiple extremes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Polyextremophiles are microorganisms that endure multiple extreme conditions by various adaptation strategies that also include the production of exopolysaccharides (EPSs). This review provides an integrated perspective on EPS biosynthesis, function, and regulation in these organisms, emphasizing their critical role in survival and highlighting their ...

The Evolution of Parallel Electron Temperature in Magnetospheric Reconnection Inflows

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Using data from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission captured in a reconnection inflow on the magnetospheric side of Earth's dayside magnetopause, we find a region where the heat flux density gradient term balances the parallel compression term in ...

The Equation of State [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1993
AbstractThere are two basic approaches to the equation of state for stellar envelopes and interiors. The traditional method chooses the so-called “chemical picture”, in which the notion of atoms is maintained despite the plasma environment. A mixture of atoms, molecules, ions, electrons and nuclei is considered, and the occurring ionization and ...

A Multidimensional Relativistic Hydrodynamics Code with a General Equation of State

open access: yes, 2010
The ideal gas equation of state with a constant adiabatic index, although commonly used in relativistic hydrodynamics, is a poor approximation for most relativistic astrophysical flows.

Single cis‐elements in brassinosteroid‐induced upregulated genes are insufficient to recruit both redox states of the BIL1/BZR1 DNA‐binding domain

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phytohormone brassinosteroid‐induced gene regulation by the transcription factor BIL1/BZR1 involves redox‐dependent DNA‐binding alternation and interaction with the transcription factor PIF4. The reduced BIL1/BZR1 dimer binds preferred cis‐elements, while oxidation alters its oligomerization state and disrupts DNA‐binding ability.

Cold quarks in medium: an equation of state

open access: yes, 2009
We derive a compact, semi-algebraic expression for the cold quark matter equation of state (EoS) in a covariant model that exhibits coincident deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoring transitions in-medium.
