The Equatorial Ionospheric Anomaly and the Equatorial Electrojet

Radio Science, 1969
It is shown that for the American zone the F‐region equatorial anomaly and the equatorial electrojet are highly correlated, whereas the anomaly and the Sq current system correlate poorly. A suggested explanation for the correlation is that the eastward electric field which drives the electrojet is also present in the F‐region and there causes upward ...

Equatorial Electrojet in Ghana

Nature, 1962
PRELIMINARY investigations on magnetic variation in Ghana were reported at the Helsinki Congress of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in 1960. It was suggested that the variability from day to day in the diurnal range of the vertical field component at a station 0.5° south of the magnetic equator indicated a movement of the equatorial ...

Modeling the equatorial electrojet

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1985
The equivalent circuit method has been modified to give greater accuracy and greater detail near the equator in order to model the equatorial electrojet. Electron collision frequencies used in the conductivity model are consistent with laboratory measurements.

Equatorial electrojet phenomenon

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1992
Evidence has been discussed showing: that the ionospheric current system is basically in two layers; that the upper current layer peaking over the dip equator at 136±8 km altitude is likely the worldwide part of Sq; that the lower current layer peaking at 106 km altitude is likely the equatorial electrojet (EEJ); and that the EEJ returns close by the ...

Sporadic-E and the equatorial electrojet

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1964
Abstract An analysis of characteristics of sporadic- E at Indian and American equatorial stations has been made for quiet and disturbed days during the year 1958. The analysis reveals certain differences between the two chains of stations which indicate a possible difference in the width of the equatorial electrojet at the two zones.

Introduction to Geomagnetism: The Equatorial Electrojet

American Journal of Physics, 1961
The fundamentals of the measurement of the earth's magnetic field are described. The general form of the geomagnetic field is approximated to the field of a theoretical dipole magnet. The solar daily type (S) of transient variation in the geomagnetic field depends on the solar activity, the seasons, the geographical latitude, and local time.

Equatorial electrojet and radio scintillations

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1983
Abstract It is shown that the day-time scintillations of VHF radio waves at the equatorial station, Huancayo, are very small, of the order of 1–2 dB peak, during the equatorial electrojet condition. If the event of complete or partial counter-electrojet occurring either on quiet or during disturbed conditions is followed by the occurrence of ...

Rocket measurement of the equatorial electrojet

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1970
Four Nike-Apache rockets, equipped with cesium vapor magnetometers, were launched in the equatorial electrojet region in March 1965. The rocket launched at the magnetic equator during the period of maximum electrojet current flow detected a 220-γ discontinuity in the magnetic field between 96 and 130 km. A peak current density of 13.5 amp/km² at 106 km

Contour maps of the equatorial electrojet

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1968
Abstract The magnetic elements tabulated for the four I.G.Y. Pacific observatories of Guam, Koror, Fanning and Jarvis Islands are used to produce contour charts of the diurnal variation field by the method of projecting the observatory onto a geocentric sphere which is stationary with respect to the Sun.

Comparison of equatorial electrojet models

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1977
Abstract Comparison of different models of the equatorial electrojet with several observed parameters shows that models using high electron collision frequency are in better agreement. The electron collision frequency in Richmond's (1972) numerical model has been adjusted empirically to fit experimental results.
