An integrated treatment of observations and models of the undisturbed equatorial electrojet is presented. Previous reviews have concentrated on particular aspects of the electrojet phenomenon, such as ground magnetic variations, the counterelectrojet, or E region electron density irregularities and associated plasma instabilities.
